Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Posted by Becky, Volunteer Mentor @becsbuddy, Feb 19, 2020

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

@bustrbrwn22 @sueinmn @jude07 @fiesty76 @lioness. @mayofeb2020 Thank you all for your good wishes! Can’t get an appointment to see the neurologist until next month! Yikes! Luckily I have an appointment with a rheumatologist who specializes in autoimmune next week. Keep up the walking and I’ll try to join you! Becky

@becsbuddy. Just got back from orthopedic doctor for my hip pain. He moved my legs in directions i don't even know is possible, check my reflexes and declared my hip is in perfect condition no surgery needed. I have hip bursitis and S I joint dysfunction.. Got a cortisone shot and exercises to do at home. I have to cut down on my walking, maybe 20 to 30 minutes instead of the 45 minites walk in the morning until it gets better. Going back in 5 weeks. I'll be thinking of you when i walk. Get well, we are all sending positive thoughts your way!

Ouch, @mayofeb2020, Glad you won't be needing surgery but hip bursitis and joint dysfunction doesn't sound like fun either. Hope the cortisone kicks in and you heal quickly.

@fiesty76. Thank you. My hip has been bothering me for a while, but with covid, I waited until now. It's definitely not a walk in the park. The shot is yucky, hope it will help. Not looking for miracle, just a reduction in pain. I have spinal stenosis too, this combination is not easy. Will start the exercise routine tomorrow. Probably walk just a shorter distance for a while. I'm a fragile flower, hahahaha.

Both can be miserable. Hope you feel better soon. And I'll say "Ice! Ice! Ice! My SI and bursitis both responded well to being iced after therapy & exercise.

@sueinmn. Thank you so much for your advice. I have a big 10x14 ice pad. I have been icing after my walks. Will take a few days off... Not difficult since it's very hot here, then short distance for a while.

@mayofeb2020, Smiling, dear one at what you wrote. In my wildest imagination I wouldn't have pegged you as a "fragile flower", even temporarily! You provide such strength and motivation to us that while even the most valiant warrior needs to take out some time to rest and recoop from time to time, "fragile flowers" are often the loveliest and most cared about. So call on any nearby cyber or physical "troops" for help and support until you are back to your best, ok? Hugs

Well, drat it all, @lioness! Where is my wand when it is needed? When I find the "safe place" it is in, I'll give it a big wave for you and others of our walkers not at their physical best right now. Take care.
