Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Posted by Becky, Volunteer Mentor @becsbuddy, Feb 19, 2020

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

Let's hope the grid can handle it.

@feisty76 I have a nice 2 wheel bike but cannot ride it because of my knee issues. And my idea of a three wheel bike, right now, is a CanAm Spyder motorcycle. I almost have my husband convince to go halfsies with me on a used one! When walking I use walking poles in each hand, which help my balance and gives me a nice stride. Beyond that, they can be used very effectively against any dog who would attempt to upset me, and to maintain a socially acceptable distance. Not that at my walk time at sunrise there is anyone else out...

@gingerw, You are such a young whipper snapper! Just thinking of a motorcycle brings a smile! I've been a passenger on one a few times and found the ride exhilarating! Go for it. Good idea and glad your walking poles add balance to your walks. Poles remind me of my first snow skiing attempt. After a 30 minute lesson...I alternated between the poles and my rump to get back down the first trail...spent most of that weekend sipping hot buttered rum and cheering on the others! Smiles

How do you wash your silk plants? Mine need it too— my lungs fight With the dust— judy

@judyhodgen, I have a variable stream attachment for my garden hose; use the misting setting and after giving each plant some good shakes, then wipe each leaf to prevent spotting from high mineral content in our water. Time consuming and I get wetter than the plants but in my dusty, dry area and with compromised lungs, it really needs doing. For smaller plants, have used a spray bottle on the patio. Surprisingly, the "silks" have withstood several yrs of doing this. Houseplants don't get enough sunlight in my home so this is the "next best choice" for a sight of green indoors for me. Good luck.

What about a shopping mall or big-box store? Maybe you have an organization nearby that has an indoor track?

@ellens, Thx for the suggestions. I did those last Jan-Feb before Covid. For now I'm staying out of stores. Our small city is reporting 300 new Covid cases/day. Not surprised with 2 colleges and people here ignoring masks and distancing. Bunch of people in this state who will only extend the virus longer for all of us. Be well and safe.

@lioness, Sounds like our strings of 100+ temps are finding their way to you. Yesterday was only mid-80s here and I'm thinking: sweater weather! LOL Waiting until 6am to drive to nearby park for walk this morning; the cooler morning will be fab!

Another idea for cold, wet, snowy and icy days outside is walking inside with a dvd. Jane Fonda made a DVD when she was around 78 years old called, "Walk Out", very low impact and one can get 1 mile in while walking in front of the tv.

Great suggestion, @deborahfrick! I don't have a dvd player now but can look for indoor exercise programs on t.v. Not the same as walking but the exercise is the key to staying as active as possible while having to be inside. Thank you.

Hi @fracturedd I’m glad @lioness got you interested on walking. Don’t believe her, though, she’s always walking OT doing something! The people in the group are all ages and abilities. We just know that exercise is the best medicine! Don’t try to keep up with anyone. Just walk!

@becsbuddy, Laughing because so true about what you wrote about our @lioness always being busy doing something!
