Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Posted by Becky, Volunteer Mentor @becsbuddy, Feb 19, 2020

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

Hi @fracturedd I’m glad @lioness got you interested on walking. Don’t believe her, though, she’s always walking OT doing something! The people in the group are all ages and abilities. We just know that exercise is the best medicine! Don’t try to keep up with anyone. Just walk!

I like the idea of chair exercises, I'll do that too.

Welcome @deborahfrick123 ! Glad to have you in this wonderful virus time. You just go at your own pace and try foe 3-4 days a week. We all have different abilities! Some have gorgeous places to walk and some like to think of gorgeous places, but we all have fun!
In my into to the site, I included an article by the Mayo Clinic which lists their safe way to start.
By the way, what brought you to MayoClinicConnect?

Thank you, I appreciate you sending me this information. I have terrible RA and Fibro, along with osteo arthritis. Every little bit of help on exercising works.

Hi Lioness, I just watched Jackie Tally on Youtube. What a great site! I like her because she is my age or younger, but if feels like she is right on with with my physical limitation/activity level. I can't "Thank You" enough. Debbie

@fiesty76 Drive or walk to a park and walk. Get a bicycle [3 wheel if needed] or a pair of roller skates. If you are in a house, how about yardwork? Personally I much prefer the outside to inside a building of any sorts.

I like what your friend said. In the past I have gone to the ocean and stood looking out to sea. And realising the enormity of it all, and my little part in it. Very humbling.

Yes, @gingerw, I do drive to nearby parks to walk on good weather days. My concern is for those wet, slippery wintry days when, with my osteoporosis, I dare not risk a fall.

My yards are my passion and being outdoors is my favorite place to be. Not fortunate to live by an ocean or even big lake but nature and fresh air do more for my well being than almost anything else.

Friends laugh and say "don't call her until late in the day because she'll be in the yard!" They are right unless high heat drives me inside.

I do really like the idea of the 3 wheel bicycle though because that could be used as aging and neuropathy become more of a problem for feet; however, the pedaling might not be good either down the road on the feet...worth considering/investigating though. Thanks for your response! Take care and stay well.
