Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Posted by Becky, Volunteer Mentor @becsbuddy, Feb 19, 2020

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

@fiesty76 I'm sorry. I guess I took it all wrong. Who knows that they are good friends. I just thought it wasn't funny.

@lioness - This being the walking group, I'm reluctant to share recipes here. But since it is bounty from the garden, I will post it on the gardening discussion here: https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/lets-talk-about-gardens/

Mayofeb2020,
, there were several quakes yesterday. They were centered closer to me. The 4:30 a.m. quake woke me, but the almost 6 a.m. quake I really felt. No damage reported anyplace. There has been the Angeles Forest Fire north of Azusa that I last heard was out of control.
Fire season has started.
Yesterday was a shake and bake day.

@funcountess When I was in the quake in Seattle. The pictures moved and the floor rolled. I stood in the doorway with my dog I had then. I could not get over how the floor could rolled.

@lilypaws. Earthquake can be unsettling, no pun intended. It's a funny feeling when you are in bed and an earthquake strikes, it's like you are on a water bed. Those of us who have live in CA for a long time and children who are burn here get used to it eventually, but it's scary if you are close to the epic center.

@lioness It was a stupid fall - I was climbing on something inappropriate and went backward onto the floor. The main things hurt were my pride and my posterior - I was careful not to fall on my newly repaired thumb! After that I went and got out the step stool with the proper hand-hold rail to finish the chore of putting up freshly washed curtains.

I got my walk in early today - a little over 3 miles in and hour and 5 minutes, then got the pond deep-cleaned (a Friday task), got showered, had a Zoom meeting and did a little weeding. Now I'm ready for lunch and my book for an hour before I fold yesterday's laundry.

Went exploring in the garden and found enough cucumbers to make a pot of potato-cucumber soup for supper - will serve it with grilled cheese & fresh tomato sandwiches. I love garden dinners.

@sueinmn, Glad to hear your fall didn't damage your thumb. But injured pride hurts too! vbg

Agree that nothing is better than one's own garden dinners! I love English cucumbers but have never tried any cucumber in soup...Do you just chop and add at the same time you start the potatoes???

@lilypaws, Hi, Lily, Thanks for understanding.

As this pandemic drags on and on, I find my already "overly sensitive self" becoming more grouchy and touchy about things that ordinarily wouldn't phase me. I get out of sorts over the fact that so many continue to defy virus safety precautions and that I live in an area where far too many "individualists" declare that they will do whatever they choose to do and let the rest of the world be damned. Could never have ever imagined in anyone's worst nightmare that we would all be experiencing the radical changes brought on by the pandemic that is so drastically changing our everyday lives.

Members of Mayo Connect are brought here because of having or being caregivers for those who have serious health issues. We are more aware of the dangers Covid-19 poses. I am so grateful that this community exists for us to share and learn from one another.

Are others here finding themselves finding it harder to stay positive or am I just going into a slump?

@fiesty76 No, you’re not the only one who gets crabby and short tempered. I sometimes think it’s my middle name! You are always so upbeat and have a kind word for everyone, I can’t imagine you going into a slump! Guess it’s serious. But then the world has gotten so serious. Politics and one country not liking another, and the job situation, etc, etc. It never ends! But, I guess, if we continue doing what’s right, and helping those here on MCC, we’ll be OK, and one small part of the world will be OK.

Today has been a busy one! I started with a 3.5 mile walk because the weather was great, then came home and edited a letter my daughter is preparing to send to her school administration about return to school concerns. Then I offered to mow lawn for my husband so he can fix a flat and tune up my bike. That was followed by a lengthy call with both daughters about the letter.
Finally, I sat down for a snack. In between were two sets each of hand and back exercises and a bit of weeding. When I looked at my fitness monitor I see over 14500 steps - no wonder I am tired. Good thing I have leftovers to serve for supper...

I just purchased a pair of Allegria Traq shoes, I programmed my new shoes into the smart phone app. I don't think the shoes are recording the steps accurately. Your message made me realize that I should have checked my Samsung health app to see if the step counts are the same? If my shoes don't track accurately, I'll return them.

@funcountess I'm sorry about those quakes. I was in only one when we lived in Bellevue Washington. I stood in the door with my dog and couldn't get over how the floor could roll. Sorry about the fires too. You have all ready been through that which destroyed part of your house. I hope the insurance will come through and you can get it finished. It much be very hard on you.
