Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Posted by Becky, Volunteer Mentor @becsbuddy, Feb 19, 2020

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

Yesterday we went out. First to the lab for blood draw for husband while I stayed in truck. Off to fill truck up with gas; it was on fumes. Up the road further to check on two building supply/DIY stores. Lunch, then grocery shopping. Did fine until just more than 3/4 through with shopping. All the walking and warehouse style concrete floor did my knee in. I am a "grumpy gus" when that happens, and at that point hubby was wandering around, looking at things. I got the truck key, he got the shopping cart, and I hobbled to the truck. Of course there were unexpected items in the bags when we got home. But at least he finished and got it checked out for me. Steps done with a purpose.

Hi fiesty76,
Taking a break from vacuuming. Are you interested In Shopping for me at Walmart?
I’ll send you my list. My goodness 2 hours in Walmart?
What are yoU buying?
With the virus running rampant in California it’s better to stay at home, and do without, then Risk An infection.
Is Texas getting a strong hold on the virus?
Anytime you need to borrow a cup full of stress let me know, I’ll send my insurance company to you. It’s either that or a bucket full of genuine ash from the fire.
Now back to vacuuming.

@luvjesus, I'll take 'em! Smiles I have tried drinking Boost between meals but found it filled me up so that I wasn't at all interested in the next meal of "real food". What I am trying now is just adding a few more bites than I really want at each meal. Slowly, too slowly imo, vbg, I have added three pounds so that and patience may bring me closer to normal weight.

How is your new walking plan going? A two hour shopping trip to Walmart counted for my walk yesterday and maybe even tomorrow??? Smiles.

@migizii I don’t know anything about Boost, but I use Orgain for protein enhancement. I have a similar problem with weight gain as drinking it tends to fill me up, but I can usually manage half a bagel and some veggies with it. I have only drank the chocolate variety and find it very tasty.

Glad to hear you're up and about! I've been walking indoors ...just at my house due to covid and the heat. I cant wait till Fall! You'll reach your weight goals eventually! Avocados are high calorie and healthy fat.

We have a good park where I live to walk around. They put in a concrete path, but I like walking beside it. A friend had gotten me a Y membership and I enjoyed using the pool cause it helps keep weight off the joints. Can't afford that now.

@migizii and @luvjesus, Thinking more about how to use Boost for added calories, (Mig,it is another canned nutrition drink sold at most groceries), yesterday I tried, for the 1st time, using it as my beverage instead of water with my large breakfast. I used 1/2 can, diluted with water and ice. Then did the same again with dinner. By doing this, I was able to eat a small lunch, with a few healthy snacks thrown in for good measure. I am going to try this again today and hope after a week of trying this, I'll see a new pound or two of weight gain. Chocolate is my flavor too! Thanks for your responses and I'll let you know how this new venture toward added pounds works for me.

@fiesty76 That was yesterday this is a new day remember go for a walk on the wildside now

@lioness, Does myriad trips in and out of garage to bring in some of last purchased items and add them to my 'supply list inventory" count as a "walk on the wildside" today??? I purely hope so because I'm still dragging from last store trip and there is more to bring in today from garage???? Gulp, today is another "official" walking day and another decision...neighborhood or garage into house back and forth??? Fresh air is a good choice; items put away is another...oh, decisions, decisions!! Smiles

@funcountess, Laughing while sending regrets on the "offer" to become your personal Walmart shopper! I'm still limp around the gills from the last marathon!!

Because TX is competing with FL, CA, AZ to remain in the top 5 "hotspots" for virus outbreaks and hospitalizations, I am thinking that
in person shopping will become much more hazardous for me as more local cases are reported.

I started with a 27 item list of otc meds, supplements, lotions, topical pain relievers,Q-tips, deod, vitamins, eye, nose, throat aids, band aids and Boost to name a few...smiles. Because I am picky and Brand name specific as well as only certain items are recommended by my docs, it was tedious and time consuming having to scan the many rows of products searched. Add to that dish, laundry, products along with cleaning products and food prep and storage products in another large area of the store and I had an unfilled but expensive cart worth of goods at check out. Having depended on grocery delivery exclusively since early March, I was running low on these.

Earlier trips focused on cat food which my grocery doesn't stock and things like paper products, light bulbs, batteries for electronics, Sharpie extra fine pens, cat litter, etc that are cheaper at Walmart.

Have to decline your offer for additional stress from your ins. co. as well...just learned yesterday that our medical ins is switching from Humana to First United...earlier was Aetna. Each switch also means a switch to a different pharmacy plan as well.

As for the offer of a bucket of ash, I had a purely harrowing experience. I'd added 3-4 day "dormant" fireplace ashes to my compost pile. Saw flames through my window while going to bed! Shocked beyond belief, I immediately called fire dept and grabbed garden hose. So happy to report that fire trucks were on the scene in about 10-15 minutes and except for damage to the compost bin and several fence pickets, the fire was out in short order. Very frightening experience so can't even begin to imagine what you and so many others experienced with the out-of-control fires in your area. From that time forward fireplace ashes remained in fireplace for a week or two and then were wetted thoroughly before putting in our metal dumpster.

Hmmm, vaccuuming is my very least favorite household chore. Even using a Dyson, my back aches. My daughter recently injured her back and her p. t. practitioner told her to pretend she was a T-Rex...tyrannosaurus with very short arms and thus to use very short back and forth motion while vacuuming. Wish I'd known to do this when I first injured my back years ago...it really Helps!!!!!

Yes, staying home is the best policy for those of us unusually vulnerable to the virus. I do feel better though knowing that now I have daily otc supplies recommended by my docs and other basics I count on for personal use and cleanliness.

Are you taking extra precautions now that the country is reporting an upsurge in virus cases?

@gingerw, Sounds like a busy, productive day out for you and hubby! Glad you got so much accomplished but can sympathize with your likeable expression of being a "grumpy gus" when knees became troublesome. Like your hubby, I've added a few "impulse" buys to my shopping cart as well. After all, we need a few treats for that effort, yes? Smiles
