Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Posted by Becky, Volunteer Mentor @becsbuddy, Feb 19, 2020

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

Hi fiesty76,
Yes, I have spurts of energy. I’m up in the morning hitting the floor running as they say. I don’t want house help with the virus going around, so I do what I can myself.
I don’t have an off site storage unit, what is going on after the Wolsey canyon fire that got me real good, my insurance company is paying for van and storage at a moving company. I e not seen some of my furniture/ belongings in almost 2 years. Because of the virus it’s difficult to get workers in the house, and to be honest I don’t want them here. Most of the house has been rebuilt, but plenty left to do.
My niece is spending time with me, so getting boxes and boxes sorted out. The boxes are what the movers packeD, but did not put in their storage, they left everything in the garage.
I’m up very early today because landscapers will come soon. More later.

@funcountess, First the damage and recovery from the Wosley canyon fire and now dealing with the unpacking of your belongings. You are dealing with a double whammy for sure! I'm like you in not wanting workers in my house. Was very reluctant to even call for a new filter replacement install for my AC until one commode handle/apparatus broke. Marked the repair date on calendar because the plumber makes so many "house calls & repairs". Good to hear that your home rebuilding is nearing completion and that you have some help from your niece in sorting out your belongings. "This too shall pass" and I'm hoping for you it will be soon! Best.

@imallears, Good for you! On a good day, I fluff my feathers for managing several blocks. vbg

Excellent idea; I'll look for it. A "Local Covid News" thread will be especially helpful for those of us in states where the COVID numbers are rising exponentially every day.

Daily correspondence with my close friend living in Queens, NY has given me a whole new world of perspective on how drastically daily lives have been lost and affected while that state and city were at virtual lockdown as the early epicenter of the pandemic. I only wish more across the nation had read and followed the precautions taken by the vast majority of that area in bringing down their numbers so effectively. It took the leadership of their elected officials along with the cooperation of neighboring states and millions of individuals despite desperate lacks of supplies and federal aid, to not only flatten the curve but also achieve numbers that other states can only now begin to understand and appreciate. Proof positive that while it Does "take a village", it really can be done if everyone pulls together!

Hi, all, I’m sorry for not posting for a few days.i was “out of it.” Sunday was a weird day but I came back to life yesterday! Had a great walk on Saturday with an old friend I don’t see too often. Her parents were good friends with my parents all through their army days. I then met her out here and we’ve been friends ever since. Went to Walden Ponds (not THE Walden Ponds). It was gorgeous! Have good walks, everyone!

@imallears, Oh, brother! I was using the magnifier all over the place and not finding your title! Goofy me at last looked at today's Daily Briefings and there is your post listed in the Just Want to Talk forum. More scattered brained than even usual these past several days!

Hi @lioness . No walking for me today. Did my YouTube exercises instead, plus it’s just too hot and I can’t wake up early enough. Doctor feels that I should stay in when it’s hot and pace myself better. Sure wish I had your strength, Linda!. I’ll try, try again

@becsbuddy I was right with you today . My strength disappeared today .Yesterday I went with a lady who had her cataract out it was so thick it took longer and the wait was longer then I thought I'd be . She has a black eye today and sore . My hip was hurting me today so didn't do any either . Tomorrow I'll get back into it again . I did do some tonight . Guess that counts.

Wow, that sounds like a brutal cataract surgery...poor woman.
I have been able to walk every day but cut a half mile off ...down to 2 miles. But I have to be out the door by 7 AM. I don’t see haze any more but our air quality is only deemed to be fair. It’s not healthy for anyone with respiratory problems. Hoping to get some rain this weekend which will change the weather pattern here and possibly bring cooler evenings and cooler mornings.
Have seen no joggers, just an occasional slow walker or dog walker.

I went back to gym class yesterday which felt good. Masks on and off as there are just some exercises you can’t do with a mask. We were all 6 or more feet apart. I’m at the point now where walking in the morning has become an obsession. We are all hale and hearty in my family but still taking no chances. Bless our good immune systems.

@imallers Glad you got back into your gym and doing well. I feel like a I am in a Covid Cocoon like you said . Can't believe this place now they are yellow taping places to we cant stand to get the mail. It's getting worse and worse here . So many people are leaving here I may start to look myself but hate the thoughts of packing up and moving . In N. Hollywood they are placing a fine of 300 dollars if caught without a mask . Our Gov is serious . Glad I don't live there . Take care .Going to color this afternoon adult coloring its a bible verse on it . Will post when done
