Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

Hi,
No walking today, Sunday, first time not out on at least 2weeks. Got up too late so anytime after 7 is just too warm. Slight haze here again . We have had no rain so the afternoons don’t cool off and the nights stay in the low 80s. I miss the late afternoon thunderstorms.

Last night I walked around my house 10 times. Will do that again today a few times....I get antsy sitting too long. Staying away from the gym for another week.

FL has an open container law...driving or walking. You can be arrested for public intoxication or just carrying a drink in public.

Very quiet in the area and have not seen the usual walkers except for those with dogs.

@imallears, I've done the inside house walk routine because of weather a few times too and while it doesn't make my top 20 list of preferred activities, I'd remind myself that "motion is Good for you, keep at it, sister!"

I spent the summer after college grad. working in Corpus Christi. It was my first lengthy experience with high humidity. At that time, it was popular to wear the highly sprayed bee hive, Big Hair, "do"...looked like a mass of cotton candy! The summer combo of heat with humidity was like a suffocating blanket for a gal who'd grown up in a hot but very dry clime.

Is your haze due to the Sahara dust whirling our way or is this a more typical occurrence in your area?

Staying away from your gym routine must be hard but so glad you are taking extra precautions as the Covid spread continues its rapid spread through both our states.

A friend shared a homemade meal with me yesterday. I nearly inhaled it!! Realized later that that was only the 2nd meal I'd not prepared since March. Yes, it was good but really!!! Even Dr. Fauci reported driving to pick up take out restaurant meals...what a chicken am I! lol

Hello Sue,
Thanks for all the info.
At Home Depot the kid in the nursery dept. said Indian Hawthorne was a fast grower. A lot they know I guess.
My regular Gardner. is the one who tells me fertilize often. I will cut way back, and tell him too much fertilizer on the bushes is not good.
His answer to everything is more water and more fertilizer.
His helpers do not understand English,so I must stay outside and watch them, as they are known to pull flowers and leave weeds.
It’s a common problem with the gardners in my area.
Yesterday, Saturday had a burst of energy. I cut roses for 2 hours, trimmed some tree branches, vacuumed half the house, and washed floors in 3 rooms.
Today, it’s laundry, and more rose trimming.
My niece is staying with me, and helping to get stuff ready to take to charity. Us Americans have so much stuff,it’s time to give to charities, so they can get things to those less fortunate.
I’m a big believer in donating, to help others.
Hope your thumb is getting better.
Thanks again for all your good advice.

@funcountess, Wow! You Did accomplish a lot on Saturday. Very, very impressive. Completing just one of those many physical tasks would have had me fluffing my feathers. It appears you have more energy than one spunky gal needs so how 'bout ff some of your excess ??? Address to follow. Thank you! Smiles

I agree and wish I'd thought years ago to buy or invest in some of the off site storage units that are so profitable for those who own them. VBG! So many of us don't understand the terms: "wear it out" or "use it up" but instead fall eagerly to advertisers' ploy of "you Need this" or "new and improved whatever". Our donation centers are not yet receiving items but I keep adding to my donation bags for when they do reopen.

@sueinmn, Sue's gardening advice has helped me too. Another added benefit of this wonderful Connect forum, yes?

@imallers I just saw a bear enjoying himself in a round swimming pool He was having a good time splashing and rolling around It was funny to watch ,a lion was walking around the neighborhood somewhere jumping over fences they got both of them and transferred them back to the Mts. Yep common occurrence .

Hi
Walked 1.5 miles this morning at 7. The haze is due to the desert and not normal here. But I swear I could smell the sand. It filters the sun a bit in the morning.
I am going to start a Local Covid News thread in Just Want To Talk Group. My summers during and after college were spent in air conditioned offices in NYC. Now there’s a lot of walking to and from the subways and up and down those steps. Walked all over Manhattan.
