Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Posted by Becky, Volunteer Mentor @becsbuddy, Feb 19, 2020

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

Hello Sue,
Thanks for all the info.
At Home Depot the kid in the nursery dept. said Indian Hawthorne was a fast grower. A lot they know I guess.
My regular Gardner. is the one who tells me fertilize often. I will cut way back, and tell him too much fertilizer on the bushes is not good.
His answer to everything is more water and more fertilizer.
His helpers do not understand English,so I must stay outside and watch them, as they are known to pull flowers and leave weeds.
It’s a common problem with the gardners in my area.
Yesterday, Saturday had a burst of energy. I cut roses for 2 hours, trimmed some tree branches, vacuumed half the house, and washed floors in 3 rooms.
Today, it’s laundry, and more rose trimming.
My niece is staying with me, and helping to get stuff ready to take to charity. Us Americans have so much stuff,it’s time to give to charities, so they can get things to those less fortunate.
I’m a big believer in donating, to help others.
Hope your thumb is getting better.
Thanks again for all your good advice.

Well said, @imallears. Learning to practice self-care and be less hard on oneself can be a tough lesson but one so well worth learning.

@fiesty76 Yes, it is hard to practice self-care since my surgery. My husband does do much, but gets on me if I twist or do something wrong while I'm wearing the brace. He brings up how expensive the surgery was and don't want me to do something that would cause m to have another surgery. It was hard when I got home from the surgery learning I could do many things and only my husband could do them.

@imallears My husband took a couple of pictures. His co-workers at the job he goes to every other month don't believe him; they are in the city. I told him to go take a picture of the deer poop left behind! We also have elk in the neighborhood, but haven't seen any for a while.

Oh..city people lol. You have an elk? That's great. Saw a bobcat one morning long time ago. Use to see our deer out walking but haven't in a while..surprised since there were less people and cars out from March on...although I did see a lone young one last week.
They are in our subdivision

@imallers I just saw a bear enjoying himself in a round swimming pool He was having a good time splashing and rolling around It was funny to watch ,a lion was walking around the neighborhood somewhere jumping over fences they got both of them and transferred them back to the Mts. Yep common occurrence .

@imallers It was on T.V. no I didn't see it in person. I think these where from Monrovia near the Mts. We don't have anything like this here in Long Beach . I'll smell a skunk traveling through but that's it .

@lioness @imallears. My daughter lives in LA Cañada Flintridge and it's close to Monrovia, the residents there are used to seeing bears in their backyard and frolicking in their pools. They did see a mountain lion recently.
