Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group
Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots.Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'
And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?
Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/
So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.
Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?
Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

@imallears, Loved your response to @gingerw and also giving Big Thumbs Up to all AC repairmen and other utility workers who are keeping us and our households functioning and comfortable!! Two different losses of all communication..phone, tv, computer for over a day once and over 2 1/2 the next during the last 6 weeks made me appreciate in ways never before experienced my gratitude once they were functioning again!!
Yep, as though Covid spread isn't enough and more divisions in our country seem to disrupt the news daily, now we get to contend with Sahara desert dust clouds to boot! My area is known for its prolific dust so would like to pass on more coming this way!!!
@jal333, Thanks for your post, Jal. We have a great Ace Hardware store here and it is good to learn that they have N95 masks available. Good idea for refreshing your masks with sunlight, too. I don't know but think the ones I ordered are washable but I do spread mail in entry way and leave it for a day or two in hopes that sunlight will destroy any virus germs. I wear gloves when retrieving it from mailbox and then wash hands. Stay safe and well!
Hi, @jal333, How lovely to be near a beach for a walk! My community is doing a poor job of wearing masks and distancing in public. I always wear a scarf to use as a face covering when in the yard or on my walks, just in case someone comes along who isn't taking precautions.
There are so many people who have decided that Covid19 is not real. At first I was shocked and started to treat them with contempt, but now I realize that my ignorant name calling responses only result in behaviors that degenerate quickly. Sad to say, I usually respond now by simple saying to them. I have lost two friends, one in FL and one in LA due to Covid19. They were dear friends. I am grateful, that your family has not been touched yet by Covid19. There are some really scared people out there and they are reacting irrationally. Peace.
@fiesty76 I am staying as safe as I can . The other problem we have is the mail. This post office here delivers the mail but refuses to deliver the boxes if they don't fit in the mailbox. So a friend here has been on them about this she even sent a email to Washington D.C. post general he did reply to here and they are bringing up all the boxes today . Good for her but she volunteered her and me to organizing them and have everyone who has boxes to come down . Vincent who is only in his 50's will let people know who have boxes . Wasn't that nice of her . lol I told her she is like a dog with a bone. You take care . I see in Fla the Mayor told the bars they cant serve alcohol guess just the food . Wonder how that will to over . Be safe
@fiesty76 As I told imallers I wouldn't go out till its at least down to a trickle ,know what I mean . Who know if the Sahara dust is different from our dust here ? Be careful keep you mask on .
@fiesty76 They may go plan to plan . Keep hoping I hope you get them soon they send 2 so you can wash one and still have one to wear they are very comfortable .
@fiesty76
Hello,
Went out a little late today for a walk and just did 1.5 instead of 2.5 miles. There was haze in the sky and an occasional breeze. The haze made the sun more comfortable. Expected to be 96 in my area today and there is a heat advisory warning out from noon to 6 pm, I was actually weeding a bit in the early evening but not for long. Keeping my weights and step up on in plain sight so Ill be motivated to exercise.
@lioness
Yes, the bars are open and they can only serve drinks in To Go sealed containers. So I guess there will be people congregating in parks with their containers. Don’t know if they are limiting the number you can buy. Hope they jog home instead of driving.
All I see is FL on the news. More cities, especially the vacation areas south of me, are mandating masks. More people than not are wearing them now but I did see 2 women in Target without them last week, after the mandate went into effect in my county. You can buy masks almost anywhere now.
My adult children both here and in Orlando are getting news of friends who are sick. I have known the ones where I live for many years...all in their 50s and 60s.
When things return to normal or the new normal, I have decided to wear a mask during the flu season.
I would sincerely like to unsubscribe to my 90 day free trial of 2020.
Take deep breaths and do breathing exercises while you are walking. Keep moving and eat like your life depends on it.
FL Mary
@imallers Your life may depend on it that made me laugh but maybe true. I just hope now that they have these to go drinks that they don't toss there containers on the ground ! Some will probably . I haven't gone out yet I'm not a early bird so will get my self together soon and go for my walk .
Hello Sue, hope your thumb is getting better.
I have a question. I bought 2 Indian Hawthorne 1 gallon plants at Home Depot 2 years ago. They have hardly grown in the two years. Yesterday I noticed a near by house had 8 planted one year ago, and they have really taken off.
Gus the landscaper said Home Depot sells 2nd class plants with not great root systems, while the near by house probably had a landscaper get their plants at a regular wholesale nursery. Could this be true?
My Gardner turns the soil every few weeks where the Indian Hawthorne plants are. I lightly fertilize about every 6-8 weeks.
Just wondering if you know why big box store plants grow slower?
