Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Posted by Becky, Volunteer Mentor @becsbuddy, Feb 19, 2020

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

@athoub. Of course it's not too late. Some days I am not motivated to walk but once I am out of the house, I feel better. Walking on a treadmill is good too. The idea is to keep moving!

thank you dear, really the motivation is one of my biggest problems, you cant balance your feeling all the time. I hope I can walk outside but the weather here is too hot

@jocelynk. Yes, walking alone is not as fun as walking with a partner. I listen to Spotify when I walk....mostly oldies. If you see something interesting, take a picture with your phone and share it with us. We are your virtual walking partners so you are never really alone. It's good for your health and beats sitting at home alone. Get some vitamin D too!

Hi,
I have been walking daily since March when the stay at home went into effect but have never participated in the virtual walking...don't know why since I usually I have something to say on some topic.
So let's both start and, by the way, 45 minutes on the treadmill is excellent .
I walk 6 or 7 days a week about 2.5 miles. Started back to 3 gym classes a week when they reopened
My usual time was 7:30 but now, living in Florida, the heat and humidity has ramped up significantly .
Now I hit the pavement at or before 7 am. I'm already sweaty on the way back but have gotten into such a habit that I still drag myself out. Taking me longer in the humidity and my time has increased from 40 to 50 minutes. Some hot days I m literally just putting one foot in front of the other on the way back.
In pre Covid times I would hop in the car and use the gym's treadmill and other machines . Except for gym classes I still leary of being near other sweaty people. We have marked off places in the gym room.
Met some new people over the past few months and noticed how many Amazon boxes were on the trash lol.
Will try to participate more because this is such a great
thread.
FL Mary where masks are now mandatory inside businesses in most counties..just today in my country...happy about that

@athoub, I want to welcome you to Mayo Connect. I am happy that you have already met @mayofeb2020 who is a terrific encourager for us on those days when we think we don't want to get moving.
I read that you are a liver transplant recipient, well so am I. I used to have a group of walking buddies, and we walked regularly in the mornings at the park. But none of them walks anymore. So this is a fun way for me to walk with others and to adhere to a regular pattern of activity.
This group was started with the purpose of walking everyday and encouraging each other. @becsbuddy introduced a walking program where you add increased distance and intensity each week. I don't know much about it, as I just walk. Becky knows more about it and keeps a count of the 12 weeks. Here’s the link if you want to read about it. – Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule

Having walking buddies is a great motivator. I plan to walk tomorrow morning if it does not rain. Will you join me, virtually on your treadmill?

I also want to invite you to join me in the Transplant Discussion Group. https://connect.mayoclinic.org/group/transplants/

ya, I understand.... for me I don't think the gym is a good idea I subscribed for 3 months and attended for 3 days only lol ...am not a gym girl
but after I had my liver transplant surgery before four years I gained more than 50 pounds and every time I visit the doctor he asks me to lose my weight which is so hard, I tried most of the diets, each time I failed and gain more weight.
last time I tried a keto diet and unfortunately I get the same result
I thought maybe because am not moving at all, my time is divided between laying in the bed or watching movies
I hope this time it will work diet + walking and some exercises

@athoub Welcome to connect NO its not to late we seem to just go on and on . we love out group as while walking we enjoy the birds or flowers and take pictures if we see something interesting and share on here so we are all interested in where and what we see on out walks. Some of us set goals like our leader Becky is walking to somewhere in Colorado so we figure how many miles we do each day some more then others. Our fearless leader is @becsbuddy she can give you some ideas . Some listen to music on there route See you on the virtual trail
