Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group
Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'
And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?
Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/
So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.
Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?
Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

@rosemarya Now that I have finished hauling rocks in the early mornings, I will resume my walks. It is so quiet around here.
Ginger
@gingerw Congratulations wow that was alot of rocks. NOw you can rest and admire all your work and feel satisfaction .
Seen on my Minnesota walk just now- Nopal or Prickly Pear cactus in full bloom in the neighbor's rock garden. Yes, they do survive winter here if they are a high desert variety on a south facing well drained slope.
Now off to the patio to relax in my garden
Sue
You guys are awesome. I didn’t walk today with you as I had to mow. It’s really difficult for me as it has a hill (due to our walk out rambler style of home). I do it in stages as a don’t have much strength. Maybe I’ll make one of your next walks. How does this virtual walk work like Zoom meetings where you see and talk to each other?
@jocelynk, Did you walk behind the mower? Then you walked! Our goal is to encourage each other to get any kind or amount of physical activity as a means to improve our health. By 'virtual' we do what you have just done - we share our experiences here in this discussion and we enjoy each other's companionship as we add support and encouragement on lazy days.
Life with health conditions at any age can be lonely as well as lead to a sedentary lifestyle. This is a lively fun group to hang out with and it is available 24 hours for anyone.
Maybe @becsbuddy will tell you about the 12 week walking program if you are looking for a more structured walking plan.
@gingerw, Have you met @jocelynk? Both of you have engaged in an alternative activity: she mowed and you moved rocks!
Thanks for the information and encouragement. I do have both a rider for the back part of our property and a push mower, which I was using on the hill in my earlier comment. I do need more walking for sure but doing it alone is no fun. Thank you again.
Hi everyone, I`d love the idea and I hope it's not too late to join the group? because really am struggling with walking every day. and doing exercise..the best I can do now is walking in the treadmill 30-45 minutes a day by day ..sometimes am doing exercise
@jocelynk. Yes, walking alone is not as fun as walking with a partner. I listen to Spotify when I walk....mostly oldies. If you see something interesting, take a picture with your phone and share it with us. We are your virtual walking partners so you are never really alone. It's good for your health and beats sitting at home alone. Get some vitamin D too!
@athoub. Of course it's not too late. Some days I am not motivated to walk but once I am out of the house, I feel better. Walking on a treadmill is good too. The idea is to keep moving!
