Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Posted by Becky, Volunteer Mentor @becsbuddy, Feb 19, 2020

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

@fiesty76. Just got back from my daughter's. It was wonderful. I have a few gardening questions that I hope you can help. She said her zucchini are all male. Is there such a thing? Also something is eating all her dill seedlings. She has no idea what the culprit is. She had inverted a little plastic cup over them for a make shift hot house. The chards are untouched. We watch flying squirrels going from tree to tree while we ate dinner at their patio. Quite a sight.

@lioness, Any more virus breakouts in your bldg? Thinking of you and agree that our pets can be our best friends and an additional perk is that they love us any way and every day, yes? Hope you are staying well! So glad your family did a drive by!!!!!

@fiesty76 . Yes we got a notice on door that someone in bldg . has the virus but heard that 2 people on the 6th floor have it . I,m on 4 and never go up there . I'm doing all I can to protect myself . Thanks for your concern . I'm afraid to see all this going on in Tulsa and what that may mean in 2 weeks. You stay safe and stay in . I still do grocery delivery and probably will continue . I have celery coming up and beets . I planted this in the garbage garden . My D.I.L has shallots . Glad you found that website . Thanks . Take care

@lioness. Sorry to hear that someone in your building had gotten sick. Stay safe. I'm seeing more cars as the days go by. Even nail salons are opened. My friend who owns one said they are swamped. They are practicing social distancing inside, and everyone who goes in has to have temperature checked and wash hands first. With Father's day tomorrow and July 4 coming , I'm worried about more cases. Our Governor has mandated masks must be worn if social distancing is not possible but I still see people without it. I'm not seeing any leveling in any city in CA. Take care!

Hi, @jocelynk. As a walker in this virtual walking group, I want to welcome you to Connect and to our walking group! We come from a variety of backgrounds and medical conditions. We all have different capacities for exercise and we like to chat along the way - kind of like a group of friends out for a stroll together.
Please join us as we share our virtual walking adventures! Are you able to be outdoors to get some movement, or do you prefer to stay indoors?

I am able to do both but haven’t since my husband died over two years ago.

@migizii oh, please be careful and take as many precautions as you can! Glad to hear you have access to grocery delivery where you live and have a hobby you enjoy that doesn’t involve being with others—-but the earth’s beautiful plants as they grow this unique and challenging summer.

Hello JocelynK,
Sorry you have been thru the “ medical wringer”, what was done to patients years ago,was that was the info doctors were given at the time. Today there is more sophisticated thinking. The cancer you had was difficult to deal with. And yes some treatments are difficult on the heart, as are many medicines.
It is best to stay in during this pandemic. I hesitate to go anyplace, you just never know who can have the virus.
Do you have pets, or any crafts you enjoy working on.?
So many people on this connect do beautiful art work. If we all lived close together I think we would either take art classes, or be at each other’s homes being company to each other doing our art work.
Many of the women are widows also. I guess we are at that age, although my husband passed at a young age.
Stay well,.

@funcountess I was wondering where you where . I heard there was a fire up in Santa Barbara county where you affected by this ? I hope nope . We have 2 covid cases in out building but I'm o.k. taking all kinds of precautions, incl. spraying the soles of my shoes.
