Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Posted by Becky, Volunteer Mentor @becsbuddy, Feb 19, 2020

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

@sueinmn I often have trouble sleeping too. Have you tried Melatonin and also Theanine. If they help they are at least natural and not like taking dangerous drugs.
I had a lovely walk this morning and on my way in, I was just about to walk down the steps and I heard a crying sound. At first I thought it was a bird and then I noticed a tiny tabby kitten in the middle of the walkway. it was so sweet and it let me pick it up. I brought it inside and I contacted a feral kitten lady. We arranged to take the kitten over to her and she said to not feed it as it was too young and I would cause problems. I got showered and dressed to take the kitten over and then I thought I would check in case there were any more. Sure enough I could hear crying coming from the middle of the thick ferns. This one was black and he was a fighter. I went to pick him up and he spat at me. Well I soon had my husband involved and we caught him with strong gloves and we took the 2 of them over to the kitten lady. We put them in a box behind her car and rang the bell and stood well back for social distancing. She has now fed them and they are curled up with 2 white kittens. She sent a photo and some video over and they look so sweet. The poor babies were starving. I think the mother was trapped and dropped up the coast which is not a sensible thing to do. These kittens will be spayed and neutered later on and homes will be found for them. So that is my good deed story for the day. You can see that I am a big animal lover. I feel happy that at least the kittens were rescued. Happy walking everybody and who knows what we may find tomorrow. LOL

@wisco50 I was very happy to do it. I am just sorry they lost their mother too soon but they look awfully sweet cuddled up with 2 other orphaned white kittens. Later on they will be spayed and neutered and they should end up with a good home.

@pollyanne @becsbuddy I too, although I do not participate a lot in the walking group, think the contact can keep us motivated.
We are walking primarily at the HS track since it is flat and the hills on our street bother my hip. I took this picture and told my son and daughter that the sign was to welcome us "seniors" - of course, I knew it was for members of the senior class, but I like to kid them.

I'm sorry to hear your knee and arm are hurting. You are smart to keep moving I think, but if there really is a lot of pain you might want to check with your doctor to make sure you are not doing more damage. I was about to have a cortisone injection in my hip before the world changed so now I am really hoping the time will come soon when I can.

@pollyanne, Thank you for rescuing the orphaned babies! Wonderful that you knew and arranged a safe foster home for them with the feral kitten lady. What an added gift for both you and them on your walk today! Added stars to your crown, dear one!

@contentandwell, Love your photo and sense of humor! But of course that sign was to welcome us silvered haired walkers, who else? I hope we keep the walking group going as well. Knowing that others are also pushing themselves to walk helps keep me on track...heh, heh.

@lioness Are you on Facebook? If so try Silver Sneakers. They have a number of chair exercise routines. I will keep my eye open for other ones too, I am always looking for different exercises and sometimes come across ones that are designed to be done sitting. I have even seen a chair yoga one.
For those of you who might like to take advantage of things like that on Facebook but do not want to have it as a social setting, you can set it up so no one can see that you are on there, or set it up so only a few chosen people can know you are. There are some worthwhile things there, such as the Silver Sneakers exercises.

@becsbuddy, Joining with others in hoping that this walking thread will continue. Like @patriociao mentioned, the cyber support really does “Make the lack of personal contact more bearable” . And as @jude07 wrote, “this is motivation for me too”.

Hi, @robbie1956, Since first posting my concerns about leaving the garage door up, life has taken a dramatic turn for us all.
Who would have predicted that covid provided a very unexpected aid? I’ve not driven since 3/13th so not unpacking groceries from the car has helped. Also turning and leaving the utility hall light on each time I now enter the garage has been another reminder, especially because I am guilty of leaving the door up while back and forth in the yard.

@lioness, Thanks for reminding me that age is just a number! Smiles At 25 yrs and celebrating a qtr century mark, I was appalled to realize that I hadn’t reached “wisdom”. Now at 76, I’m just glad to still be here! vbg

Let’s keep going!! I’ll never know what week it is, but that’s ok, because we’ll just keep going. Wouldn’t it be interesting to figure out how far we’ve walked since March. Like, @lioness, have you walked all the way to Texas to see @fiesty76 ? And did she cook something good for you?! And, maybe if @jakedduck1 told us what state he’s in, we could all walk to his house for one of his gourmet meals! But, I guess it will have to be virtually since we can’t really go anywhere. Darn! Guess I’ll just keep on walking around here. 😥

It appears we may get rain/snow mix here on Sunday and then again the middle of next week. I am done with this weather however I won't give up walking. If anything I want to walk in the warmth of the sun🌞Where do I need to walk to😂
