Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group
Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'
And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?
Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/
So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.
Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?
Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

I took yesterday and Sunday off however two days off in 5 weeks was pretty good. Today, I wanted to really change It up so I used my stairs to do fifteen reps up and down each time walking the area in my house and finally, I put on a mile. Then I used my weights for my upper body strength and then some floor exercise. My goal is to get out in the "crisp" 28 degrees and do a short walk this afternoon. It's so easy to stop exercising and so difficult to get back to it. It's called 'just do it'!!!
@jude07 Oh, how I can relate to your taking off 2 days from walking!! Some days it is only my stubborn gene that pushes me to do those 3x/s/week walks.
I'm in awe of what you accomplished today. As a result, even though this isn't a "designated day" ...and it is more than chilly at 33 degrees for this naturally cold adverse oldie, I figure if you can get out for a walk at 28 degrees, i can snow woman up for at least an around the block traipse. Will be asking for my reward upon return. Good Going and thanks for the inspiration to try a bonus day!
You can do it!! Giving ourselves a little push makes us stronger emotionally as well.
A little motivation from England...
Captain Tom Moore, 99, set out last Thursday to walk 100 lengths of his garden before he turned 100-years-old on April 30. He originally hoped to raise £1,000 for NHS Charities Together, but smashed that total in less than a day.
In less than a week the Bedfordshire veteran has captured the nation's heart and raised more than £2.3million to support doctors and nurses as they battle on the frontline of the coronavirus pandemic.
@gingerw I will be walking shortly, it is a nice day here today, 59° and sunny. My husband did some yard work so I will be walking alone, which is fine really. I walk faster than he does when I am alone.
@imallears I'm with you -- dark chocolate is my thing. I do also like good white chocolate, if it's real white chocolate, many are not.

Good for Captain Tom Moore. I share his birthday but he is 20 years ahead of me.
@jude07 Just do it! Great thing to remember. I lag before going to my health club for exercise, unless I am going to a 9:00 class. I put it off and off because I dread going so I am often not there until late afternoon. When things return to normal that will have to be my mantra (it's a Nike slogan, isn't it?). Of course once there and particularly when I am done, I am very happy that I did "just did it".

@jude07 I have also taken 2 days off because of my leg. This morning it is raining but I shall try to walk later when I hope it clears. My leg still isn't good but it is better than it was. I think it must be coming from my knee so I need to be careful.
Yes, it is a Nike slogan and goes way back, however it still fits for today. I just finished my walk outside and feel better with 2.1 miles for the day. Hope others were able to do whatever you can! Keep it up!!
Yes, please be careful and heal!
