Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Posted by Becky, Volunteer Mentor @becsbuddy, Feb 19, 2020

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

OK! It’s your friendly drill sgt again. let’s move all the talk about food to this discussion in Just Want to Talk https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/recipes-food-tips-healthy-eating-more/. Or, we could call it Just Want to Eat! We must be doing really well in our walking group and needed to put back on all the pounds we lost! Let’s move ourselves over to the discussion on food tips, healthy eating, and more. Thank you!

@contentandwell thanks for the suggestion but I don't have an exercise bike. I do some stretches and a few weights. I have a lot of pain all over my body which started when I was a fitness instructor. It was during the days of the high impact classes and I suferred from overuse. It never went away plus with age now everything is wearing out. But I am still very active and I like to hike when I can. I also have some auto immune problems which don't help.

@lioness You are right there. That's what I try to do. Sometimes I leave my stretches if I feel inflamed. With me it is mostly back, hip and neck, but it moves around. Are you wearing a mask when you go to the stores? I am nervous to go anywhere. My Dr called me yesterday and she told me to wear a mask if I go to the store.

A recent study in Singapore said 10% of the people with the virus infected other people before they show any symptoms. So we have to assume that we all have the virus and we have to stay put to protect ourselves and others.

Yes, I am so careful that I don't go out. If I decide to go out I have a mask from the VA but no disposable gloves as they are not available. Today they say that talking and breathing can also spread it. The ones that scare me are the asymptomatic ones. The masks will help to stop those people spreading it to others.

@lioness. @pollyanne the droplets can even be in exhaled breaths. They do not travel as far generally, but they can be in the air. That was why about 2/3 of a choir in Washington state got infected.

The shedding of virus before symptoms also applies to the common seasonal flu, and colds, which is in same family as this awful Coronavirus.
