Pain Pill Addiction and Neuropathy - Looking for Guidance

Posted by mom29907 @mom29907, Feb 2, 2020

I am a neuropathy sufferer, CMT, with minimal pain right now. However, my mother suffers from painful peripheral neuropathy. She is the reason I joined this group. I am looking for advice and guidance. My mother was treated by a neurologist for years and prescribed Percocet. She became addicted. Recently, her neurologist referred her to a pain clinic. Her Percocet prescription needed increased and he told her he could not do it. At the pain clinic, she was prescribed methadone. Upon her return visit, the doctor at the clinic "released" her, said she was an abuser of her pills. So, she not only is dealing with chronic pain she is suffering from withdraw symptoms from years of pill addiction. Watching this is heartbreaking. I am desperate to get her treatment for both conditions but she isn't making it easy. I am looking for suggestion for successful treatments that don't involve opioids. I was going to encourage her to try laser therapy but don't think that will be an option due to how expensive it is. Any guidance, suggestions, etc. would be so greatly appreciated.

I did not have my head hanging off the bed but the PT has to try different movements to see which works for you to be able to determine which ear and which canal is the problem. Other wise they are not able to actually do the correct movement to free up the trapped crystals. Complicated but not every ENT is good at this.

I had a physical therapist hang my head off the bed a little bit more than the vertigo clinic did so I tried it both ways & try not bend over or lay flat afterwards but I did get some advice to do it three times a day instead of once a day so I’m gonna try that

To clear this up I’ll explain to you the way they do it. I start off sitting up on the bed with my head tilted to the right and then forward a little bit a whole deposition for two minutes and then I’ll lay back real quick with my head still tilted to the right and I have a pillow underneath my shoulders with my head hangs down little bit. Then I turn my head to the left and stay there two minutes then they had me roll completely over on my left side not move my head, stay there for two minutes then I sit up with my head still tilted to the left for two minutes then I move my head straight up normal and stare straight ahead for two minutes. that completes the cycle is that what you know?

So sorry that so many people have side effects Gabapentin. I have been taking 2,400 mg every day for eight years and have had no side effects. It has saved my life! I guess I am the exception to the rule.

I took gabapentin not for neuropathy, but for for posttherpetic neuralgia (nerve pain after shingles), and I didn't have any side effects or issues tapering off. It helped me with awful pain and discomfort. From reports here on Connect, it appears to vary a lot person to person.

that is exactly the way this gal did it, she explained that sometimes the crystals get stuck or land in the next canal so it doesn’t always help right away. I know when I tried I wasn’t successful (maybe no patience). Luckily, when it has come back it has only lasted for a few hours.

@wilcy, can you please share what severe side effects you experienced with Gabapentin? I also have spinal stenosis and never was given a skin biopsy to confirm a diagnosis of SFN so not sure if this is the cause. I don’t think it much matters but my neuropathy is worsening somewhat and think my short term memory is worsening, so I am thinking ahead of alternative therapies. Thanks, Helen

I stopped gaba because I couldn’t remember anything. Made me want to sleep all the time! Doctors agreed with me about gaba! You need to look into spinal stimulation! Am scheduled the 26 to have it done!

@wilcy

I hope the stimulator gives you relief from your pain. Have you done the trial run?

They can give her suboxen to take the pain and cravings away. Also has she tried generic lyrics and possibly cymbal ya for her leg / foot pain? I have severe fibromyalgia and l believe the generic is pregallam but I can look up for generic lyrica
