Pain Pill Addiction and Neuropathy - Looking for Guidance
I am a neuropathy sufferer, CMT, with minimal pain right now. However, my mother suffers from painful peripheral neuropathy. She is the reason I joined this group. I am looking for advice and guidance. My mother was treated by a neurologist for years and prescribed Percocet. She became addicted. Recently, her neurologist referred her to a pain clinic. Her Percocet prescription needed increased and he told her he could not do it. At the pain clinic, she was prescribed methadone. Upon her return visit, the doctor at the clinic "released" her, said she was an abuser of her pills. So, she not only is dealing with chronic pain she is suffering from withdraw symptoms from years of pill addiction. Watching this is heartbreaking. I am desperate to get her treatment for both conditions but she isn't making it easy. I am looking for suggestion for successful treatments that don't involve opioids. I was going to encourage her to try laser therapy but don't think that will be an option due to how expensive it is. Any guidance, suggestions, etc. would be so greatly appreciated.

Ok I believe I understand
Thanks so much
I tried Gabapentin and everything else remotely related pn treatments. Most did nothing, others had unacceptable side effects.

Gabapentin is the only prescription drug I take and if I had a choice I would not. I think I should probably be taking a larger dose but prefer to try to keep it at the lowest dose possible. I have found that taking an nsaid along with it helps although I can’t do it too often because it causes extreme vertigo for me upon awakening. The side effects from gabapentin are numerous, I’ll never understand why the drug co.’s can’t come up with a better solution.
@helennicola You are so right Never again will I take this gabapentin First I had anger issues next I was taking a shower and was dizzy almost fell good thing there are grab bars Horrible drug
This morning at 4 a.m. the NEUROPATHY EXPLODED.....I am sore all over all the way down to my feet.

@margaretob I hear what you are saying . My neck is so stiff and sore my thighs are burning and tight . I am up at 3 a.m. I wont be able to go back to sleep. I use cold water on thighs for some relieve wont take gabapentin anymore terrible side effects. I was taking 4 at night but with the dizziness and balance problems stopped it Im getting my heating pad out see if that will help . Maybe a drink will help . lol
I’d give anything for my balance to come back in my dizziness to stop I’m dealing with it for over a year it’s driving me crazy
@birdierobin I know mine was from the gabapentin . I never was that dizzy before and taking a shower was scary in the tub. I stopped it and it hasn't happened since . At one point several years ago I had vestibular problems the ear Dr sent me for testing and this all came back o.k. so he told me just to do the ear exercise I did them for a month and it did the trick . I did have some slight dizziness so started them again once or twice I was fine. Do you have any ear problems? That is the worse feeling . If so I,ll give you the ear exercise they are online. If you think it maybe you ears I would check with a ENT first.
So sorry that so many people have side effects Gabapentin. I have been taking 2,400 mg every day for eight years and have had no side effects. It has saved my life! I guess I am the exception to the rule.
