Hunger pangs

Posted by soconfused @soconfused, Jan 15, 2020

No matter what I eat I'm starving right after!
I can eat a meal and feel full or feel like i haven't eaten in days AS I'm eating.
If I feel as though I am full, within 5 minutes I am starving again!
My starving feeling makes me sick to my stomach and I have dry heaves.
I have tried eating more fiber foods, water foods or just drinking water before meals, during meals and after meals. Nothing works!

@soconfused--Good morning and welcome to Mayo Connect. Feeling like you can't get enough to eat has to be very very scary and frustrating. What kind of blood work have you had done? Have you or a close family member traveled out of the country at all? I ask because sometimes people can pick up things in another country and them share them unintentionally with others. I've read your posts but you don't mention why you are avoiding soy or bring food products to restaurants. Are you lactose intolerant?

I'd like to add my welcome to @merpreb's. In addition to Merry's questions, how long have you been experiencing this feeling? Has your weight changed at all during this period of never being able to feel full?

@soconfused- Boy sometimes it seems that some drs. don't understand the body, doesn't it? I was never tested for lactaid intolerance but had it since I was a kid. I'm good now but it was pretty inconvenient. My feeling is is your body tells you that you can't tolerate something than you can't, hence the term intolerant, maybe not allergic in the strictest sense, but can't eat it nevertheless.
Both Justin and I asked some questions in our posts. We want to guide you in the best possible way. Will you help us with this?

The feeling started in 2012 for almost 3 years and then again 2018.
As for always being hungry it seems that it started with round two of intolerance.
Dr. put my blood thru the wringer she tested for everything. It all came back normal.
No one I know has been out of the country.

@soconfused- Have you lost any weight?

Hi,
There seems to be so many different causes for your problem and a complete blood test is a good first step. You say you are eating more fiber which is great but you need proteins and fat too. Some medications, if you are taking any, can cause constant hunger...you could have a tapeworm (a stool sample would determine that).....you could have an undiagnosed intestine malfunction ....be overly stressed....not sleeping enough.....have an over active thyroid. You need to take that blood test with you and get more in depth testing. Insist on a referral from your doctor to a specialist and go from there. If he/she doesn’t know, insist they find out. I don’t know what would be the next step....maybe an endocrinologist.....but I think you will need more testing and maybe a lot of trial and error . I am assuming you haven’t gained any weight either.

Hopefully someone on this forum has experienced what you are going through or knows of someone who has. Good luck, please keep digging for information.

FL Mary

@soconfused Hi Id like to add my welcome to our group of caring people What @imallers said is good advice Id like to ask if you have gone to a gastrologist for this problem . If you haven't I would start there take that blood test with you . Then go from there if the G.I. Dr cant find anything the endrocrinologist if a good suggestion . Do you take any prebiotics ? Ask the Dr about these but get the referral first to the G.I. Dr then also the Endrocrinologist .
