Numbness and burning after knee replacement

Posted by fancyfrancie @fancyfrancie, Jan 8, 2020

3 weeks after knee replacement I experience severe numbness and burning on the leg (not the knee) above and below the knee, mostly at night. Nothing relieves it and I have great difficulty sleeping at night. Is this normal? What should I do?

Hi, @fancyfrancie Welcome to Connect, you will find many post-TKR people here, myself included. I did have some very significant pain for about 5 or 6 weeks after my last TKR in October 2017, but it very suddenly improved and from that point things were great. I was in touch with my doctor and he saw me a couple of times during that period. I think he too was relieved when it suddenly got better.
We never figured out what caused it, but the important thing was that it ended.
Have you called your doctor? He or she will probably want to check it out, just to be sure that nothing is amiss.
There are many discussions on here about post-TKR problems. If you click on the “joint replacement” link above your post you can scroll down through them. One that might be helpful is this one on “Chronic Debilitating pain After Knee Replacement”:

If you have not spoken to your doctor I hope you will, and I would like to know what the doctor says if you don’t mind sharing.

I am 4.5 wks out after right knee replacement. I have intermittenr numbness in my foot. Thry told me it was from swelling and to continue icing several times a day. I take gabapentin at night for sleep. The numbness drives me crazy at times because there is nothing i can do

@ clmeritt1962 Welcome to Connect. TKRs are a very frequent discussion here. I did not have numbness after either of my TKRs but I think it is not uncommon. I think for now you have to do as advised. If it does not improve after many months I think a visit to the surgeon is in order. I did have some fairly bad pain after my second TKR and my surgeon stayed on top of it until it went away at about six weeks. Numbness probably takes longer, I hope it will improve fairly soon.

I too had/still have numbness n tingling in my foot after TKR. I was like that right after my surgery. Dr told me it was normal give it a yr or 2. My primary said that's not normal n set me you for an ABI which showed low pressure in that leg. They did angiogram which showed a blockage behind that knee. My surgeon pinched my Popliteal Artery n more. I had the artery opened at 60 days after TKR. It helped the numbness by 50%. I still have some numbness n my foot still feels cold at times but at least I have my leg... Because as my TKR surgeon put it when I went back to him at 3 months was 1. Why did I wait so long to get it fixed 2. Most people that that happens to loose their leg. Thanks to my primary for listening to me and as for my TKR surgeon...he better start listening to what his patients are telling them. Good luck and be an advocate for yourself!

I have the same issues...numbness, swelling etc. My surgeon just says time will heal it.

Sorry to hear that. My TKR surgeon said the same thing...that's normal until an ABI test show low pressure in that leg and angiogram showed blocked popliteal artery behind my knee. It's not always normal. I could of lost my leg if my primary care Dr would of also said it was normal, but she said it's NOT normal. Good luck on you healing process.

Thank you for sharing your experience. Did you have numbness or burning? As it turns out, my burning pain (not the numbness) is finally beginning to subside in my sixth week after surgery. Nevertheless During my next post op visit with my surgeon next week and I’ll bring up my problem and yours to him. Have you been able to take care of your pain?

I had numbness like my lower leg and foot were a sleep. Basically it was. I had no blood flow to my leg/foot. Dr pinched popliteal artery. Some days are worse than others as far as pain goes. I take Gabapentin for that. But almost 1 yr out my foot is still a little numb and my knee still hurts since my knee cap fractured a few months ago. Dr did nothing with it but PT who said he didn't know what else he could do and said find a different surgeon for 2nd opinion.
Good luck with you post ops.

@fxc Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect, a place to give and get support.

Of course, numbness would be concerning.

I posted your question on a previous discussion. This was you could connect with members that may be able to offer information and support.

There are a lot of discussion on TKR where members like @wa34937 @rsroseco @ladyelaine @irish283 @lonna66 have contributed. Two of these recent discussions are listed below. You ma want to scroll through the past posts as well to find information and connections.

- TKR and knee braces https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/tkr-and-knee-braces/

My understanding is that nerves take a longer time to heal. Obviously, not no one wants any part of their body to feel numb. I do not want to invalidate that by any means but may I ask if the numbness negatively impacts you? Are you able to engage in all the activities you normally engaged in prior to surgery or prior to needing surgery?
