What are the best treatments, exercise, diet, and living conditions for stage 3 kidney disease?

@jtbrown740 Good morning, and welcome to Mayo Connect! We are a diverse group of patients, family members, and caregivers from a wide spectrum of health concerns, who share experiences and offer support to others, and receive so much in return! We are not medical doctors, and cannot diagnose nor offer medical opinions. I also have Stage 3b kidney disease, for well over a decade; my GFR ranges between 32 to 37%. Here are a couple of discussion threads from Mayo Connect, that you might want to look through for ideas. Having kidney disease doesn't have to be considered a death sentence.

Also, I highly recommend rsnhope.org for information. This organization was started and is run by a friend of mine who has dealt with kidney issues since age 3!
You will find there are several different possible causes of kidney disease, chief among them is high blood pressure and diabetes. My husband's kidney disease was caused by untreated high blood pressure, that led to dialysis and subsequent transplant just over three years ago. My suggestion to you and your mother is to educate yourself on what will work best for her, follow your nephrologist's guidelines, look for a support group in your area, or turn to us here on Mayo Connect. If medication is prescribed, take it faithfully. Diet and exercise is critical to help physically and mentally.
I hope you will come back and let us know how we can further assist you and your mother on this journey? Has the dr explained the root cause of the kidney disease?

Hello.
The Dr has not explained the root cause but I know it’s Hypertension. It started this summer and I ended up in the emergency for 4 hours with 232/110 . A lot of investigations with blood test etc, and last week I got a call saying I had kidney disease and I was referred to a specialist. First appointment will be Jan 7, 2020

@wilfreda Welcome to Mayo Connect. We are a diverse group of people, made up of fellow patients, family members, and caregivers. We offer our experiences and support, but cannot diagnose as we are not medical professionals. Yes, high blood pressure has so many bad things going for it! I am glad you will be seeing a nephrologist in a few weeks. Until then, if there is medication you are on for the BP, take it faithfully. Until you have more information, don't "awfulize" your situation by researching too much and assuming you have the worst case scenario. I've been there, done that! Jot down any questions that come to mind, such as best diet, what stage kidney disease you are at [this is based on your Glomular Filtration Rate], what you as a patient can do. If there are any things you have noticed in yourself that might be related to the kidney disease, write them down and take the list with you. We're here to answer any concerns that you have, as we are able to. Have you been treated for hypertension before?

I am newly diagnosed with Stage 3 CKD. Two other informational sites I've found very helpful are http://www.kidneyschool.org and Davita.com.

I am in stage 3 and have kept on a strict renal diet. I eat a delicious meal every day and find it easy to stay on this diet. However, I am paralyzed and got an ulcer (pressure sore) on my tailbone and it got infected when I foolishly went into a public pool for water exercise. I go to a wound care doctor ever week for the past six months and he said that I need to have a high protein diet for wound healing. I have resisted this but now I need to heal this before sepsis sets in. I spend six hours every day lying on my side in the bed so I can take the pressure off of my ulcer. I just want to get better. I have increased my proteins from 35 g to 50 - 60 g.

@darlingtondoll, you surely don't want to invite an environment for sepsis to set in.
I found this article by DaVita
- Dietary Protein and Chronic Kidney Disease https://www.davita.com/diet-nutrition/articles/basics/dietary-protein-and-chronic-kidney-disease

Darlington, How are you finding the increase in protein? Has it helped with healing the wound? Do you find some proteins are better than others for you?

I just started to increase my proteins, but I don’t do it every day. I’ll know more when I see my wound doctor next week. I added B vitamins to my diet because I only eat once a day and I need to make sure that I am getting a balanced diet. I eat a lot of shellfish because I love it and it has a lot of good vitamins and minerals. Plus it is low fat. I live in a wheelchair and I need to keep my weight at a healthy level. I weigh 120 pounds and that is the max for me. I have been going to an infusion center and get an IV every day to fight the infection. It has worked so far. Now I need this ulcer to heal.
