Hearing loss and memory

Posted by JK @contentandwell, Oct 21, 2019

I just came across this and found it to be very interesting, and frankly it makes me feel a bit better about my difficulty in remembering things that people say.

Ah...dumb phones...it’s probably something simple.
Still in Orlando with absolutely perfect sunny, 70s weather. Friday we had a picnic in Central Park in Winter Park. Then we went down to the boat cruise to book a time for an hour cruise around the different waters to look at palatial homes and learn some history. Had done this several years ago and saw the late Fred Rogers home again. Can’t say enough good things about Live Transcribe on the boat. Sat up front next to the captain...small boat....and read every word he said...knew when to look left or right etc. Awesome. Then down to a local watering hole for Margaritas....went to the Tiffany Museum in Winter Park and met up with the other half for some window shopping. Back home for more leftovers and dessert.Today the guys are golfing and we are having a daughter, daughter in law, granddaughter day until we meet the guys for late lunch and then drive my granddaughter to the airport and then home.
So...really really nice and relaxing weekend and I didn’t have to do any driving. Will stop for dinner on way home (yeah we really need to eat again).

Hope everyone enjoyed the weekend in their own way. Need to hit the gym although we walked every morning and I did some token exercises to ease my conscience. Where’s those cookies hiding?

@imallers . Sounds like you really had a great relaxing time . We have gone through Winter Park been in Orlando when Howie was small we went to Disneyworld . ON one of the rides Howard lost the tickets and parking ticket so we paid more for what we had . We where on the east coast of Fla more then the west . My day was good . I didn't have to cook my son and D.I.L are good cooks and took care of everything. After dinner we had a talent show very fun time . The newest little on 2 1/2 sang the ABC song and 2 other ones so cute . I gave her a Minnie Mouse doll she is my great ,great niece believe it , cant . I don't feel that old. I'm going to look into the Live Transcribe and Innocaption +. Even with these aides I have trouble hearing at certain places.

I meet with the surgeon on December 6. After that will have an MRI etc. I’ll know then the date of surgery. Shall I post it here on this thread? I will be blogging about it as well.

@lizzy102 Please do post it here, I am sure I am not the only one who would be interested in it. It would be very reassuring if I do have that in my future, to hear how it went for someone else. My loss is severe in one ear, profound in the other, with poor speech perception (@ 30% and 50%).

Oh gosh, JK, you might be a candidate sooner than you think. They’ve changed the criteria, so watch your audiograms! I’ll start a new thread. Hummm... gotta figure out how to do that, LOL.

@lizzy102 Those results were from an audiogram I had last month, so very recent. They haven't changed much at all in 3 years now. I am quite sure my hearing took a hit either form cirrhosis or from medications, particularly since it is once again stable.
As I said, I will be interested in hearing about CIs, the thought of it is pretty frightening since you can't go back.

@lizzy102, I would really like you to start a new discussion thread about the changing criteria. You'll find instruction on how to start a discussion in the Get Started Guide in the footer of any page on this website. Here's the direct link https://connect.mayoclinic.org/get-started-on-connect/

Powerful comment mirrors my comprehension problems, depression, anxiety and exhaustion exactly. Situations might be not be the same, the experience we share is, certainly. Thank you. I am going to have a cochlear implant because I am sick of not understanding overall content in the situations you describe, sick of the depression/exhaustion, sick of my grandchildren looking at me with confusion, and sick of loosing out! Anything will be an improvement.

@lizzy102 did you have the cochlear implant? Did you have sensorineural loss? Did it help?

@imallears @joyces Great suggestion from FL Mary - "Alone time is good but don’t isolate yourself too much…you need to keep your brain active". There is more and more evidence that hearing problems can contribute to dementia due to lack of stimulation. It makes me wonder, if you are getting stimulation by other means, such as online forums like this, does that counteract the lack of oral stimulation? I think it probably does.
When I am doing something else I never think about my lack of hearing comprehension, I only think of it when I am in that situation, so I am not depressed constantly at all. Admittedly though, when in a social environment it is depressing and frustrating. We do what we can do and hope for the best.
Joyce, what kind of hearing aids do you have? I know Phonak has some great devices to stream conversation directly to your HAs. I have Oticon and the Connect Clip they have but it only helps with streaming one person into my aids. Phonak has a device that you can put in the middle of the table and it streams everyone to your aids. My audiologist is getting me some of these aids for me to "test drive" them in December. They would have to be extraordinary for me to invest in new aids at this point. My Oticons are less than three years old and I paid about $6000 for them so another expenditure like that would be almost impossible, unless as I said, the difference was extraordinary. Then I would make the sacrifice.

I am playing catchup with a number of the groups Mayo offers and I'm dying to know the name of the device that streams. Is it their Palm Pilot you are referring to?

You’ve probably tried and made a decision but you can use a Phonak MyLink neck loop with the tcoil in your current hearing aids to link to Phonak Roger Products. I recommend the Select. It’s the only product I’ve found that helps in a group setting with background noise.
