Osteoarthritis: Let's connect and support each other

Posted by suez @suez, Oct 4, 2019

Hello. I've been told I have osteoarthritis in my hands and hip -- very painful. So far, I'm taking only Tylenol or Advil limitedly, and using Voltaren Gel which helps a little. Does anyone else have this and if so, how are you being treated. Thanks!

Hello @suez, I'd like to invite @maryclaire651, @lioness, @chincoteague, @jonr, @bonnieh218, and @collielady who have discussed some sort of arthritis in their hands and may be able to share some tips on what they did to cope with the pain and functionality. I'd also like to invite @richman54660, @catmom777, and @hazelnut who have discussed arthritis in their hip as well.

@suez, if you are comfortable sharing, how severe is the arthritis you are dealing with? Are you in the early stages and hoping to find ways to cope for long-term or are you facing potential surgery or another type of treatment?

Justin, I guess I'm in the early stages of arthritis. The pain started in my left thigh and progressed up to my hip. Also, I have occasional pain in my thumbs and wrists. I'm using Voltaren Gel and Tylenol for relief. A CT scan last week confirmed my arthritis, and a hip replacement is not needed! 🙂
I'm going to try avocado-soybean unsaponifiables softgels, which I read about on the Mayo clinic website.
Thanks everyone!

@maryclaire651. I went to the Mayo website and looked up osteoarthritis. It's mentioned under diagnosis and treatments, keep scrolling way down. It isn't really an article per se. I did read an article about it in a doctor column and can't remember the name. Sorry. I'll try to find it.

I did find this... https://www.arthritis.org/living-with-arthritis/treatments/natural/supplements-herbs/guide/avocado-soybean.php
I was afraid the soybean oil might have some negative affects but the French have been testing it for 15 years...

@maryclaire651, I have researched it a lot and everything I've read says that nothing negative or harmful had been found. I'm one who uses medication only when absolutely necessary and only as long as it's needed! I'm going to try this and 300 mg per day is the correct dosage.

I am a 66yr old woman with osteoarthritis. My fingers are getting worse.About 4 mths ago the first joint middle finger left hand became worse almost overnight at the same time the nail appeared to start going yellow which again is worse over time. I have always have week bendy nails but now this one is hard and appears thicker and stronger. No problems with other nails. It can't be Raynauds as it's not white, cold or numb. It hasn't gone to any other nails either. My GP is only doing phone calls unless the Dr feels the need to see them in person due to Covid. I also have had pain my wrists for a long time and now notice a Ganglion my my right wrist and wondered if this could be causing the pain in my Right index finger to be worse as I had so much pain down that and inbetween index and middle finger on my right hand ? Any thought or advice would be appreciated.

Annie, have you ever been seen by a specialist or are you under the care of your GP for osteoarthritis?

I have had oa in spots for years. Had my right knee replaced 15 years ago, and it's still doing well. Had the trapazoid bone at the base of my left thumb replaced about 10 years ago, but damaged it in a fall last December, and will have to have it looked at, as it still hurts. I had some in my lower spine and had a laminectomy for that. I have developed arthritis under my left kneecap. I'm on 2 Tramadals a day and 2 hemp gummies a day, and am doing fairly well.
