Ketogenic Diets and Pain

Posted by steeldove @steeldove, Sep 28, 2019

Has anyone in the group had success with a ketogenic diet? Take a look at this research article: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4124736/ Here's an abstract of the article:
Ketogenic diets are well-established as a successful anticonvulsant therapy. Based on overlap between mechanisms postulated to underlie pain and inflammation, and mechanisms postulated to underlie therapeutic effects of ketogenic diets, recent studies have explored the ability for ketogenic diets to reduce pain. Here we review clinical and basic research thus far exploring the impact of a ketogenic diet on thermal pain, inflammation, and neuropathic pain.

@steeldove lmk what you find out. Not sure if I could follow that ketogenic diet...at least Paleo cut one some slack! Pam

@burningfeetinphoenix Will do. Did you read the medical article I mentioned in my first post on this topic?

REPLY

@steeldove...I did. The research mentioned in the paper are very similar to what Dr. Perlmutter advocates in the Paleo diet. I know people who have gone on the Ketogenic diet and had amazing, transforming results! Pam

Hi Steeldove, Be careful with the Keto diet. Although it can help in losing weight quickly, it is a very unbalanced diet. Also, keto weight loss often comes right back on, much like the Atkins diet of years ago. But the real problem is that your body can go into a state of ketosis, which is quite dangerous, and unhealthy. As far as the anti-inflammatory properties , perhaps it helps with this, but at the expense of a well balanced, nutritious diet. I would be scared to do this diet, personally. Good luck, and I know sometimes we just want to try anything to feel better!! Lori Renee

Actually - ketosis is NOT dangerous. As a new member I am unable to post links - but you can do a quick Google search to confirm.

I did Keto for 9 months and lost about 15 pounds. When I went back onto a regular diet I did not put weight back on.

Hi all,
I think there might be some confusion in terms that sound similar but are not the same. Ketosis and Diabetic Ketoacidosis

Ketosis is a metabolic process that occurs when the body begins to burn fat for energy because it does not have enough carbohydrates to burn. During this process, the liver produces chemicals called ketones. The ketogenic, or keto, diet aims to induce ketosis in order to burn more fat. Proponents of the diet claim that it boosts weight loss and improves overall health.

Diabetic ketoacidosis is a serious complication of diabetes that occurs when your body produces high levels of blood acids called ketones. The condition develops when your body can't produce enough insulin. Insulin normally plays a key role in helping sugar (glucose) — a major source of energy for your muscles and other tissues — enter your cells. Without enough insulin, your body begins to break down fat as fuel. This process produces a buildup of acids in the bloodstream called ketones, eventually leading to diabetic ketoacidosis if untreated.

As mentioned above, ketosis is not a dangerous state, but ketoacidosis is, especially for people with diabetes. Has anyone consulted a dietician or nutritionist when considering the Keto diet or any other diet?

I did Atkins several yrs ago, lost the weight and a year later had to have gallbladder removed. Now I have constant diarrhea. Imodium daily. Be careful with unbalanced diets.

Sorry to hear of your health issues as a result of the Atkins Diet. Did you eat a lot of fried foods?

I've been focusing more on gut health and have been making my own yogurt with the special bacteria Lactobacillis reuteri recommended by Dr. William Davis as having many health benefits. You can read more about it on The Undoctored Blog - https://blog.undoctored.com/l-reuteri-yogurt/. I found this information on @LeeAase's Best Yogurt Ever entry on his health journey - https://social-media-university-global.org/my-health-journey/.

This afternoon I ran across a new Mayo Clinic News Network article that I thought was really interesting and thought I would share it here.

After a year into my AVM I had started the Keto diet for 6 months and did notice neurological improvements for myself. It was 2 months after my AVM that I had developed yet another symptom which baffled the doctors, a super sensitivity to sweet tastes in foods. Any food eaten did not taste the same as prior to my AVM. It was very bothersome because the sweet taste was so overpowering. I learned to eat because I had to and therefore did not notice immediately that it had disappeared totally after 2 months into the keto diet. Toni

Hi John @johnbishop. Interesting reading that a “gut” can predict if a person is healthy or not. Evidence suggests the more bacteria found in the “gut” the more healthier the person will be. I had searched the recommended tablets for the bacteria to start the yogurt. The ingredients list a flavoring of mandarin orange. I was disappointed. I prefer plain. My prebiotic supplement contains 20 strains of bacteria of which one is the recommended bacteria, L reuteri. A person can also make a yogurt using a prebiotic supplement. I will try making yogurt with 4 cups of whole milk to one dose of the supplement. Lol, I feel like I am starting a lab. Toni
