Yes it was Robert A Heinlein in Stranger In A Strange Land. Always wondered why his book was never made into a movie. The Book was a HUGE hit, sometimes referred to as “ a cult favorite “ the so called “ cult “ was Hippies who employed many aspects of the book into their communes and communal living. The word “ grok “ made it into most dictionaries and is used by those who know dare I say “ grok “ ( I named my Manx cat Grok “ Lastly, yes VMS or Valentine Michael Smith was an Earthling and bastard child of the two smartest individuals chosen for the first exploratory investigation of Mars made up of a team of earths best and smartest scientists ( married couples if I recall correctly ) however a baby was conceived between the male and female with the highest IQ’s but not married to each other. The baby was born on Valentines Day on Mars which in the story was inhabited by an intelligent life form. While the team was on Mars WW3 broke out on Earth stranding the team and a Soap Opera broke out on Mars when it was discovered thank “ My baby does the Hanky Panky “ was discovered on Mars and the team for a variety of reasons ceased to exist and VMS was raised and educated by Martians. When VMS was a young man Earth sent a recovery mission to bring VMS back to earth.
If anyone read or reads the book now perhaps they will GROK my post that surprisingly has gathered lots of thoughts shared here. It reminds me in many ways how VMS was received after returning to earth.
I’d love to find that some of you take the challenge and read the book to see if they can find the connections.
I’ve been thinking of starting another post in this talk about anything Group with “ CULTURE “
Yes... @imallears Grok was coined by Robert Heinlen (sp?) in Stranger in a Strange Land... maybe in the 60's... When I was at that point in life when I knew everything (i.e., when I went away to college), I read that book and thought I had personally found the answers to the big questions of our existence. In fact, writing this makes me want to re-read it. Maybe I'll find different answers to the big questions at 68 than I did at 18!!
