Does anyone take Pancrease and how do you do with it? Is it a life long enzyme therapy

What is it? I have elevated lipase & amylace & the dr. is saying I have pancreaitis but we don't know what the cause is. Any info on the pancreas would be helpful. Thank you.

I also have it and don't know the cause. Doctor said it can be genetic, or from taking Omneprazole for 16 years, or pancreas divisium, meaning I have two pancreatic ducts instead of one....lucky me! Can be from alcohol, and I do drink alcohol, but not enough to cause pancreatitis.

I also took omeprazole for many years but not as long as you. I stopped it about 4 months ago but I still have the high enzymes. I take another blood test in a month to see if it has gone up or down. I had a endoscopy at the Mayo Clinic in Phoenix & all the ducts were ok so they are puzzled. I don't drink & I;m not a diabetic . Do you have burning in your stomach area. I get that a lot. Thank you for oyur feedback. I will mention the omeprazole to my dr.

Have you stopped taking the omeprazole? Do you know if you stop the omeprazole if the pancreatitis will go away?

I don't know. I stopped Omeprazole a month ago. I am having another MRI in 2 days. Had one 2 months ago. It showed mild pancreatitis, but my amylase was always normal and my lipase was elevated. How did you get in to Mayo Clinic. I really want to go there for a 2nd opinion. I have been dealing with this for 4 months. I live in Fl. so I would go to Jacksonville.

My doctor said an endoscopy won't show the pancreas. You need an MRI or an EUS which is an endoscope ultra sound. Is that what you had?

@harper7745
Yes that is correct. I had a MRI a month ago & everything showed ok. I had the EUS at the Mayo Clinic in Phoenix Az. March of this year & then I had a CT Scan. It showed I have a sore that looked like an ulcer & the pathology thought it was cause from a PPI which Omeprazole is . That is why I got off of it. My dr. thinks the elevation is from a medicine but he looked up the ones I take & it was ok but he didn't know that I had been taking the omeprazole for a long time . I am going to ask him if he thinks that is what gave me the problem. The dr. said my levels were mild but in a week they jumped up a couple of points so I will see next month when I repeat the test. Thank you for your response.

I forgot to mention that I just called and made an appointment. I have Medicare & a 2nd Insurance. Mayo does not accept Medicare consignment so Medicare pays me 7 then I have to pay the Mayo Clinic. They can charge up to 15% higher but so far I only had to spend a few bucks out of my pocket. It is a 4 hr drive from my home so it is very difficult to get there. Keep me posted..

Thank you for your reply. I had a stool specimen this week and it showed that I have exocrine pancreatic insufficiency. The level should be 200mcg and mine was less than 15. That is probably why I have been losing weight and I am very tired. Starting on pancreatic enzymes tomorrow. So sad that I was on Omeprazole so long, since the doctor thinks it may be the cause. Keep me posted on your events.

Thank you. I think I need a stool specimen. I don't get rechecked for another 3 weeks & that is ith a blood test. Do you think since we stopped the omeprazole that are levels will be better? I have been off of it for almost 5 months so When I do get the next blood test hopefully we can figure it out. Mt stomach is very swollen. All pushed out around the belly button area & I always had a flat stomach until my surgery last year for the removal of intestional & stomach adhesion's & I have not been the same since. I am also suffering terribly with feet & leg Neuropathy & the meds don't seem to help. Keep me posted & I iwll do the same. Genie
