I stand in the shower for quite a while every day but do nothing else except stretching and not sitting for longer than thirty minutes at a time. Cleaning out the stenosis in the lower back stopped the pain for now. I also eat a high fiber diet and avoid constipation as the pressure can make for more pain. Yes, I expect arthritis to bother my upper spine in the future, but so far, so good. Dorisena

Stenosis is a filling of the spaces where the nerves, veins. and everything goes around the bones, and when this "stuff" fills in, it makes pain by pinching and cutting off flow. I guess you could also call it arthritis. When they fused my five vertebrae, they cleaned it out so there would be more room until it may grow back and fill in again, who knows? I don't know how to describe it all, so you would need a medical explanation of the surgery. They also put in a metal cage to hold the fused bones in place. I think it is a miracle that I can bend over and touch the floor and I can walk pretty well. I was told the stenosis could grow back some or my upper spine could be affected. They made more space for the nerves to function. It was dangerous surgery but I am blessed. Dorisena

Thank you for the explanation. I have an appointment Friday and I will ask the Dr. I have been having so much pain from my neck stenosis and I'm having difficulty walking.
Hi, first time here. 4 years ago I was diagnosed with advanced degenerative osteoarthritis. The spine has been particularly painful. 3 months ago, I had cortisone shots in the spine. Hadn’t laid horizontal in two months. 3 weeks after injections, I was able to lay down and sleep for a short time. Since then I’ve been doing back and neck exercises provided by Dan Abrams therapist. Sleeping in bed now and back pain is moderate. These exercises seem to be helping and I would highly recommend them for those with arthritis in the spine. I usually do back exercises every other day. I also got a Tai Chi disc recommended by the Arthritis Foundation. I learned the 12 step “Arthritis” section and recently started on the 24 movement version. Helped my balance, which at 73 years of age is becoming a problem.

Hello @trellg132. I'd like to invite @karolyn, @dodir, @pkindron, @pearly, @dorisena, and @noydb to this discussion as they have all discussed arthritis in the back in the past on Connect. @trellg132, what do you currently do for your arthritic back and neck?
Nothing just found out have to go back to chiropractor

What do you mean by cleaning out the stenosis?
