i have severe scoliosis from childhood polio, and i can only walk about 100 feet without a walker. i have been doing waterobics for 30 years. it is wonderful to get into the water and move around like a normal person. i don't think i could have stayed functional without it.
when i was at mayo for a minor kidney surgery a couple of years ago, one of the surgeons casually commented that i certainly had a twisted sacroiliac. i thought it an odd comment and ignored it. when i went to my doctor about my back pain, he insisted i go to his chiropractor. i had never believed in chiropractors but finally gave in, and the chiropractor said i had a twisted sacroiliac. . the first treatment cured it (for 2 hours). each treatment lasts longer and works better. i still need my walker but i stand straight and sit longer and have less pain.
@wilcy I've had three back surgeries, along with numerous injections. I find I can walk longer when I'm on the treadmill. Holding on to something like the railing on a treadmill gives me much more stability. I can't walk much more than one block without pain. And part of my problem is my SI joint slipping out. I was scheduled for a surgery to have it screwed to my pelvic bone. I canceled that surgery and will hold off until I can no longer walk any distance without pain. I just have to pace myself.
I was diagnosed with spinal stenosis years ago and the doctors did nothing but give me pills. I did a lot of therapy in the gym with a trainer and also massage, and finally quit the meds. The pain became unbearable over three years ago, but I continued to garden and have hope for improvement. The doctor wanted me to take opiods all winter before seeing the surgeon because their shots did not help as in the past. My family was against surgery. Three and half years ago I had the surgery because I couldn't care for myself and even the strong pain meds did not relieve the pain. I am pain free and not addicted to anything. I can walk into the big store but tire soon after and struggle to get back to my car, so I can't shop alone. Yes, I would love to take a walk in the woods. Everything gets too tight and feels like I am carrying bricks on my spine. Today I dug the holes and my granddaughter put the daffodils in the holes. It was fun. She thinks I am doing terrific and she is an athlete and coach. Maybe that's as good as it is going to get at my age. Dorisena
I started taking Arnica arthritis & Pure Cherry juice Concentrate in my water for RA & after 3 Epidurals. I noticed it has helped my stenosis dramatically although I did also go to Foot solutions for custom fit orthonics and I feel really good. Just a suggestion.
Good luck to you as I know the pain you feel.
