Eliminating Foods for Neuropathy pain

Posted by avmcbellar @avmcbellar, Jul 20, 2019

I have tried doing without certain foods and drinks containing caffeine and have discovered it helps me to lower my neuropathy pain to a level that is tolerable. It is not easy to eliminate chocolate, tea, and coffee from my diet.

Hi @avmcbellar thank you for sharing some success you have been having decreasing your neuropathy pain by eliminating foods from your diet.

I wanted to tag @cocodab @grandmar @pfbacon and @steeldove as they may find this interesting.

Back to you @avmcbellar how did you come across the idea to do this? Was it per your doctor's suggestion?

That is interesting, thanks for copying me. I wonder the same questions about how you were inspired to eliminate caffeine. Peggy

This is something I've wondered about... I watch my carb intake closely, taking less than 45 per meal and always including some good fats, like butter, olive oil, avocados, mayonaise.. well, those are the good ones in my book anyway.. My doctor gave me a list of foods with the carb counts and I choose what I eat from the lower count things. BUT, when I have too many carbs my feet will burn and toes swell like sausages.. I'm always open to learning more about what can keep the hurt away.. Suggestions, please?

Hi @ethanmcconkey, my doctors have not given me any hopeful information. All answers to my questions came with uncertainty. I basically learn on my own through trial and error. I had noticed that I felt better after a couple of days of not drinking hot tea or coffee. I decided to have tea when the pain started again. The caffeine seems to stimulate the nerve cells.

Thank you!!! What about dark chocolate? Is that ok?

Hi @cocodab. Unfortunately, chocolate contains caffeine no matter what form. Dark chocolate has less sugar. The more cocoa, the more bitter it tastes.

I don't eat any chocolate, haven't since the eighties, don't miss it. It's basically fat and sugar with some caffeine ... skimpy in nutrients. Peggy

That’s a long time for no chocolate. It is found in many foods. So difficult to go without. I was wondering why my foot pain felt better when I realized I had no caffeine for two days. After indulging in the hot tea and chocolate brownie protein bar yesterday, my left foot pain started up again. I thought it was a healthy choice. I know caffeine can make the pain worse but I didn’t know how much was needed to excite the nerve cells. I guess no more hot chocolate for me either. Chocolate may have good health benefits but a person must pick and choose what is more important to them. Won’t hurt to test what is good or bad for our health. Everyone is different.

I will confess that my favorite beverages are Diet Mountain Dew, Diet Coke, Coffee with Almond milk and equal. I make myself drink some Evian water when I feel dehydrated. Caffeine is my crutch - everybody gets to have one or two. Without caffeine, I would fall sleep and never get up again. Peggy
