Altered Color Perception

Posted by julianned @julianned, Jun 25, 2019

Aside from my abnormal sputum production and torso pain (which I posted about in other groups), a new issue with my vision has developed in the past several days where, when I wake up things are the wrong color (white pillows are neon blue and green, or the ceiling neon yellow) and it lasts 1 or 2 seconds and then the pigmentation shifts to normal -- bizarre. It has happened the past 4 mornings and also when I open my eyes after lying down in acupuncture. The shapes and clarity of objects are fine, but the color off. Has anyone heard or experienced this? Today I saw an ophthalmologist who examined me and said that structurally everything looked good.

Thank you so much for this thorough information. Most of this i was unaware of.
Sometimes we look more into the complicated reports, when its the simple things our parents and grandparents practiced. Again, thank you

@jaguar737 Thank you and you're welcome. I learned something too.

@jenniferhunter I found this discussion because I have the same issues. However last summer it happened while standing on the lakeshore. The white foam on lapping waves turned brilliant turquoise. All other times it has happened on waking. (Not sleeping in sunlight). Another perception problem is on waking everything I see is at the wrong angle. The armoire is on the ceiling, the hanging lights are coming out of the walls etc. I’d like to know if you’ve experienced this as well.

Hi @snowdoggirl (nice username. Do you have a husky?)

Have you had a change in medications or exposure to chemicals? Have you seen a doctor about the change in colour perception and angle perception?

I woke up three mornings ago, and noticed my pillow which I thought was black and white appeared to be a beautiful light purple. Throughout the day I had the experience of purples popping in my perception. I also noticed that blues were different than I thought they were previously. For example, the icons on my phone, which I previously thought were light blue for actually teal. The Chrome icon had a tiny spot of purple that was now very vivid. I've been searching for possible answers to why this has happened, and this is as close as I've gotten. I am a color blind woman with one cataract developing. My vision is good, I only wear reading glasses I'm 72 years old. I have a doctor's appointment in a few days and I will report back here anything that I learn. Thanks very much!

Hello @qubitsrube and thanks for sharing. I have not heard of this before and after a google search there appear to be many reasons for altered colour perception. Good that you seek help from a docter. Could you share the outcome?

Hi, this sounds similar to my situation. Upon waking, I also have varying colors - including orange, lime green, yellow and pink hues. Additionally, I have black lines across my vision that change from coiled to straight to river-like anytime my eyes have been closed for more than 2 or 3 minutes. They fade and disappear within 3-5 seconds. I have had repeated checks with an ophthamologist, the last time was 4 weeks ago. My depth perception is also altered at times, and things are farther away than they appear to me. Again - this is upon waking in the morning. I want to mention that I have had 4 serious deer tick bites in the past 3 years, and that this started after the second one. Finally, I have been referred to Stanford Neurology - and am hopeful that they can find the issue. My MRI's of my brain also show lesions similar to MS lesions and I have mild enlargement of my ventricles.

I have AMD (R-Dry, L-WET). At the time this was diagnosed, I also began to see very blue stars when I looked from less light to a more light situation as when I look out the window (from indoors to outdoors), the stars are all over the grass and some in the higher growth. Only infrequently does it ever happen in an indoor situation. My retinologist has NO IDEA and told me to see my PC who just laughed. I am in total a loss. On rare occasion, I also see either blue or yellow underlining of many different words in my writings, i.e. emails. signed, sandwich
