Taking vitamin C as a supplement

Posted by trishanna @trishanna, Jun 16, 2019

My new dietitian has recommended NO vitamin C supplements if one has kidney disease. I have for years taken 500 mg time released vitamin C and suspect it has helped me to avoid colds. Has anyone been told to avoid vitamin C?

You definitely have some serious issues going on.
Take good care of yourself and that’s an order!

@jakedduck1, no more than anyone else, I guess. Just diabetes and CKD and CHF and COPD. (My feeble attempt at humor.) I will try to comply with your order, sir! :0)

@kamama94. Took your recipes with me to the dietitian - she was very impressed but her opinion is I'm not at the point of a strict diet yet. Promised I'd share any food recommendations I receive - just one chickpea pasta. Doesn't sound good, but we'll see!!!!

Let me know how that pasta tastes. I happen to love chickpeas. But chickpea pasta? Really?

Good grief, when you get sick you do it up right. I would have cashed in by now. You must be a strong person with an amazing constitution. You know with a world population of approx 7.8 billion you can share a few illnesses or are you trying for the Guinness Book of World Records?
Easy does it,

Well, Leonard, I guess I'm just greedy and want it all to myself. (J/K) Oh, gee, I forgot to mention degenerative spine disease, fibromyalgia, and (well-controlled) major clinical depression. I don't tell many people about all my "diagnoses" because they don't believe me. I think since I'm basically very happy I don't look - or feel - ill. Life is a hoot and I'm not ready to leave the party yet.

You have a great attitude. I think we’re a lot alike. We have to accept whatever comes along. If we get depressed it only makes things worse. Being happy makes everything better in my opinion. Happiness doesn’t come knocking on your front door and can be elusive but well worth the effort to find.

Happiness is a choice. One can grieve loss and reverses yet still find joy in things.

@jakedduck1 this is so true. When I had cirrhosis, prior to my transplant, I tried to live my normal life and not dwell on that black cloud. A number of people were amazed that I looked as good as I did but I never wanted to appear sick so I worked at it. You are stuck with you have, you have to not let it ruin your life if possible.

My kidney doctor never mentioned Vit c but did say no calcium. They offer me tums at the blood bank occasionally if I have certain side effects but must refuse. @merpreb sent me a link that said if you have kidney stones to limit vit c to 500mg a day.
