Where to look for help

Posted by joy7576 @joy7576, May 29, 2019

Hello! This is my first attempt to break out of my isolation. I was diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder five years ago. I've been hospitalized twice. I received excellent care in the hospital which aided in my recovery. Upon leaving I was placed on 20mg Trintellix. It was like a miracle drug for me. For five years I've done fairly well with only small, brief relapses. No hospitalization.
Unfortunately, the trintellix is no longer effective. I feel exhausted, unmotivated and joyless again. There are physical symptoms, as well.
My former psychopharmacologist has moved away. My gp is clueless. Where can I go for help?

How many of you see family history of depression? And to add injury so to speak I had to be born with issues( misdiagnosed mentally challenged and aphasiac before 16 and hearing impaired after 16)

@bookysue an interesting question you posed today! Speaking with my sister yesterday she disclosed to me that she had been going through some counseling recently due to depressive issues. She is a retired registered nurse, and said she realize that a lot of the things I was speaking to her about was something she had in common so she sought help!. I know our mother had depression and some other challenges mentally. I have my own depression issues and adult diagnosed autism. My little sister has demonstrated some signs of mental instability that has precluded her from maintaining solid job history. Don't know much about Grandparents or aunts and uncles. Like I said before we accepted everything growing up as what was normal not realizing it really wasn't.

Yes, good thought, @bookysue. Depression has been in my family as well for a number of generations. It probably represents both learned behaviors as well as some genetic predisposition.

Interesting- with these issues in mind, not everything is in your control except how you handle things. What I had to learn is to forgive myself more but to not let family issues indicate how I handle my life.. I realize as we all do that things can seem like beyond our control. But that is when we figure what it is that is undermining us. Money issues- get help as I am - tax rebates/ cuts- Medicaid - work issues- learn to not hear the unimportant stuff and not let get in your way. Life issues- need more music in my life/read more/ less dinner outings, wandering weekends ; I am feeling better for this
And if there are folks- family- friends who is hurting you- let them go- or depression and health issues increases as time goes on. I have seen this . It seems like a lot of folks have toxic people in their lives. No one should hurts your 80 percent or more.
Certain kinds of depression are seasonal- worse in winter- better in warmer months- dosages May need to be adjusted. Stuff I
Learned. Still a long way to go in knowledge and in acceptance.

Does the evolution process means that the learned behavior becomes the trait / genetic issue
Sorry I could not resist.
But I do feel both learned behaviors and genetic predisposition as part of us does becoming more likely with 2 generations of family having depression in their lives. Domino effect .
Things get really dark ( my mom attempted a number of times- do not want to use the word) but critters and books get me out of there. That is why I cannot figure people who have done it who seemed to have everything in their lives. Scary

Your questions might not have answers, @bookysue. The answers are probably as different as each individual person.

Correct. Some things are common happen ings among the depressives- procrastination/ getting up to get going( amazing to me I deal with this everyday yet once I get going I am better for it) really interesting what we know but we still struggle. That’s why I feel it is a chemical imbalance because it is not logical as Slock would say.

@bookysue I have a history of depression and anxiety in my family for at least 4 generations before me. I am the 5 generation with it. That is one reason I never had children. I did not want to pass it on to another generation. I actually have the depositions from those who knew my great-great grandfather listing his symptoms for why he was put in the insane asylum. He spent the last decades of his life there. I did not discover this until I started researching my family's history. I wonder how many people have tried researching their family history to see if there is any history of depression. I also had someone knowledgeable on genetics to look at my DNA and he said it showed many abnormalities.

@bookysue We mimic what we see as children. We are so impressionable, and what we see appears to be normal, because no one has told us it's not. When we get older we sometimes see a different way of being as mirrored by friends, and may gravitate towards that. Or we may not. I let go of people in my life who were toxic over the years, resulting in strained relationships. But I learned it was needed to keep myself from going over the edge.
