I can't sleep when taking Cymbalta: What else can I do for pain?

Posted by popolopo @popolopo, May 11, 2019

I have tried Cymbalta (Duloxetine) but I can't fall sound asleep with it. I would like to give it a chance but I need to sleep. I take it for pain after my hip replacement.

I am currently in Cymbalta 20 mg for 7 weeks. I want to get off this drug and I read that you need to cut dosage in half. Cymbalta does not come in 10 mg. It’s a capsule. Any help would be appreciated.

@mmoss I wonder why you're taking cymbalta and why you a want to stop it. Also, when I've reduced or tapered off medications I've always done it with my physicians guidance and help. It's worked well, he prescribed me different dosages if needed as we went down and helped me understand the speed we could/should taper from the drug. That's important, as there can be some serious side effects if we come off a drug quickly or w/o tapering it slowly.
If you haven't had a good chat with the doc, maybe you should and let the two of you do what's best for you.
Let me/us know how you do and what;s happening. Blessings, elizabeth

I started taking Cymbalta and Gabapentin. I find that the Gabapentin is helping me. I have read some bad reviews on Cymbalta and really want to get off of this medication. I have only been on two months so I want to get off sooner than later. Thank you

@mmoss In order for you to find an answer to your question, I have added your question to a previous discussion on this topic.

Members @summertime4 @esperanza22 discussed this topic in the recent past and mentors @hopeful33250 @johnbishop were also part of the conversation with @johnbishop at mentioning @iplaybunco1970 @elmay @pfbacon as potential connections.

May I ask if you have contacted your provider to see if they can help you wean off of the medication?

Hello @mmoss,

Do you want to go off of the Cymbalta because of the side-effects that you are experiencing? The dose you are taking is quite low. Whenever you want to taper off a drug though you should consult with your doctor who prescribed the med. Your pharmacist might also be able to assist you.

Remember that not all of the side effects listed by the drug manufacturer will be a problem for everyone. We all metabolize drugs differently.

Will you give your doctor a call and see what his/her recommendation would be regarding the tapering?

@tigreyes2004 My doc worked with me on this.....like getting 30mg for combination for different doses. If you're only taking the 30 2-3X daily, doc will reduce # times taking and get the dose down gradually, over several weeks depending on how long you're on the drug, etc, But it does need to be done with doc in aggreement and overseeing....blessings, elizabeth

@mmoss, Good evening. I just passed this way and saw your post. I have a question. Have you consulted your clinician about your desire to get off Cymbalta? Based on my experience, the two work well together. The Cymbalta reduces anxiety and knocks the top off of depression. The gabapentin reduces pain and the needles that go along with neuropathy, especially in the arms and hands. It is difficult to find that perfect combination.

I did go get one of my capsules and cut it open with small scissors while holding it over a dish. There are tiny beads inside the capsule so you could easily measure each to be 10 mg,

May you be safe and protected from inner and outer harm,
Chris
