Premature ventricular contractions (PVCs)

Posted by MichSophie @mlcheyne, May 6, 2019

Recently diagnosed with PVCs and I’m getting really frustrated and scared at the same time. Taking 10mg propranolol twice per day which does help cut down the intensity. But I’ve also noticed with most PVCs I’m also feeling the flutters in my upper abdomen as well as my throat. I’m going to see my doctor in a couple of weeks but was wondering if anyone else has had the same expression of symptoms. Thanks a bunch!!

My cardiologist told me when I first went to see him with not even 3 normal beats in a row that out of 10 people who see him with skipped beats, he medicates only one. I was that one. He said that if a patient came to him with skipped beats but was not feeling faint or having to gasp to get enough oxygen, (which was the case with me) he would not medicate. My daughter at the time who was about 20 years old was also experiencing occasional skipped beats and I took her to see him. She had no other symptoms besides the skips and thumps and he said she was fine. I tried to get her to go easy on the coffee but she wouldn't listen. LOL Bottom line: I wouldn't be overly concerned...but see your doctor to rule out anything serious. Once I got off the medication, I cut out alcohol, coffee, tea, chocolate, stress... I have been doing that for over 20 years in order to keep my heart steady and it works for me. No recurrence.

Thanks. This just really started yesterday. Once I walk around and then stop or sit down, I can feel it. Several times in a row and my watch ECG shows the sudden beat Two or three normally in 30 seconds. I have had heart tests for the past 6 months and all with no issue other than bradycardia. Is it normal to feel this many many times all day long with no issues ?

I'll bet it will all stop....and consequently stop concerning you if you cut coffee out of your life ENTIRELY. That goes for alcohol as well. Tea, decongestants, dentist freezing etc.. I'll bet this will all be thing of the past. Are you willing to do that? I have for 22 years and except for 2 days of a few blips every minute during a very stressful period, I have been absolutely fine!

I'm sorry for all your concerns.Been there, done that!.
I had AFib for almost 2 years and was on the highest dose of beta blocker the cardiologist had ever prescribed...but anything less and my heart went into a tailspin of constant irregular beats. But then I cured myself. The cardiologist said that it was impossible. But here I am years later with a steady heart. HOW I cured myself made me realize that WE have power over our medical conditions. We don't have to resign ourselves to the mercy of Big Pharma. Many people just do as their doctors say without question. Bad idea! One needs to take control and be involved themselves by becoming informed and listening to what their bodies are telling them and making lifestyle changes.
I just came back from 2 weeks in Holland where you don't see ANY overweight people. None! Most people are not even what we call normal weight. They are all slim...and beautiful due undoubtedly to excellent health. Why is it so? They bicycle and walk everywhere. There are 2 bikes for every Dutch person. No one drives a car in Amsterdam because first of all it's too slow compared to a bike. Hordes of people with babies and toddlers on board (without helmets) ride to and from work and daycares every day during rush hour. Elderly people go shopping by bike. It's inspirational! We should follow the Dutch model and get out there and MOVE. I don't know whether you do but I certainly need to do more. A Fitbit makes me accountable. (Again, taking control of my own health!).
How did I overcome my Afib, the most serious case my cardiologist had ever seen? I took control of my own health. I joined a gym and went 6 days a week. Within a month, I lowered my dose gradually of beta blocker which the cardiologist wanted me to do. I kept this up for 4 months, going to aerobics and strength training classes every day but Sunday. But very important to further take control of my own health: I stopped all stimulants; coffee, tea, alcohol, decongestants, chocolate etc.. Here I am today 24 years later with a stable heart. I do have to say that if I cheat and have a coffee (2x per year) or a chocolate, my heart races or gives me thumps. I consider it a warning and listen to my heart which is sending me a message loud and clear.
I hope you can do the same.

Yes. I wore one for 21 days. Sinus bradycardia only found. This kind of just started. I guess I just want to know when it’s an emergency and when you just deal with it from people who have this happen. It’s a heartbeat followed by another one. Then normal. Then back to the previous

I always think with heart palpitations issues it's always best to call the doctor's office and report new symptoms. For many years I had palpitations. Over the years, at different periods, I had it checked out. Nothing serious, skipped beats Then around three years ago, really bothersome episodes of palpitations and a racing hear that made me feel anxious. Checked it out and told nothing to worry about . Atrial tachycardia I could take diltiazem or treat with magnesium. Chose magnesium and for about four months everything settled down. Then a flare up with lots of palpitations lasting for hours and a super racing heart that started just from walking quickly. I let this go for about a month! Did a holter monitor and this time it picked up ventricular tachycardia which does need to be treated. (on metoprolol).
So for many years my palpitations were annoying but not anything to worry about until a few years ago. Skipped beats are usually nothing to worry about. It sounds like you have been investigated. Ask about magnesium. Some cardiologists do recommend it for regulating the heart rhythm. And call your doctor if you are still worried.

Try to get your acid reflux under control. Zantac, Pepcid or even Gaviscon. (I also am a long-time acid reflux sufferer). Also reduce and or eliminate the foods and beverages that are triggering your symptoms.

Thanks to you all. So it is possible the GERD is causing this?
