Magnesium and heart rhythm problems

Posted by EllAmster @ellamster, Apr 17, 2019

Dear all.
I already posted something on magnesium in another group, asking if the tablets i was advised to take could have to do with some problems I am experiencing. But I thought I would post it here too.
I have a heart rhythm condition that sometimes really acts up. I had a TIA years ago, followed by my heart stopping less than a year later. So I am under supervision of a cardiologist.
But since I also have a bowel condition (sigh) my doctor told me to take 2 magnesium tablets a day, making a total of 1500 mg. per day. She said I could take even 6 tablets if I wanted to, because there are no side effects. I just heard that there can be, and I wonder if anyone of you has any experience with magnesium and a heart condition, and how this makes you feel.
I would love to share thoughts on the subject since I am not feeling very well ever since I started taking 1500 mg. of magnesium per day over two weeks ago. I called my doctor but they told me there are no side effects. So well, I thought I needed a few more thinking caps.

Were you taking magnesium citrate? I am surprised that the magnesium was what gave you problems. After vitamin D, magnesium is apparently what humans are most depleted in. Read Psychology Today; The chill pill.

Thank you for asking how I am doing! I have been feeling terrible and stopped using magnesium. This helped, the brain fog is gone and so is the pain in my chest. I am so sorry for not getting back sooner, I really have not been well at all. But since a week I have been thinking I was good to go again 🙂
I stopped the magnesium and feel better. I hope to pick up the pace again.

Good to hear from you, @ellamster! I'm glad to hear that you are feeling better. Keep posting as you are able. I'm looking forward to hearing how you progress.
Any other health issues you would like to discuss with this forum?

Thank you!
No no other health issues i would like to discuss now 😀
But I would like to add that the cardiologist said that it might simply have been a coincidence. That each time I had this splitting headache simply coincided with taking the magnesium. That being said, it would be amazing because I hadn't felt that bad for ages and it stopped once I stopped the intake of magnesium. The mind boggles!

I read that magnesium correct arrhythmia and PVCs, but could also lower the blood pressure. My BP is low to begin with and I am afraid to take magnesium. Anybody with low BP taking magnesium?

@sophieshor l had bradycardia and was told that last year, l don't know if it was due to some of the drugs my doctors had me on lbecause there were a lot of recalls on the high blood pressure meds l was taking. Then l started taking supplements, l went to the health food store and even to the nutrisitionist house and she told me l going to help you get off all those meds and help you with your liver. So she told me to take magnesium, calicum and zinc. I just had surgery last month emergency heart ablation surgery because will l was in the hospital to see if l was having seizures l went into tachycardia twice and the cardiologist l have is a God sent. He told me l going to do something l can't let you go home with this happening. I went to the hospital on a Monday and l have been having problems with my heart since 2014 and it was diagnosed after l fell out went to a hospital and given opiods and meds l was allergic too. I was even given antidepressant by a pervious psychiatrist who should be in jail. She would just increase my antidepressant and l would tell her there was a problem but she kept increasing the dose. So l kept the bottles and they thought l was mixing the doses. l know how to take meds and meds that don't agree with me l won't take. when they ran test they saw l wasn't addicted to any drugs. So they had it as my heart and the cardiologist l was going to did absolutely nothing and now they are saying l owe them money since 2016 and report it to my credit burear but like the Bible say No weapon formed against me will prosper. And Hold on let the Lord fight your battle. Now our state is suing the insurance company but God Bless them because you have to take responsibility. l have had my new neurologist tell me he was sorry because l was misidentified and l felt sorry for him. l know its not his fault he's the doctor and its his staff. He doesn't book appointments but he came to me and my family twice and apologized that's a good doctor. I have respect for people like him but lies NO. And while being admitted for seizures they found out it was my heart. And l had emergency surgery and it was successful but then after surgery why is that they are giving me meds l not able to take and l was only admitted for surgery and the meds they were giving me were from a pervious doctor a year ago. l don't even go to because of a misdiagnoses. So l would say be very careful and talk to your doctor about your maganesium levels if he or she is working for you. You can research how much magnesium you can take. And if you need to talk to go on the Mayo Clinic website, AARP, GoodRX, health food store you can trust and there are other hospitals who are doing a lot of research. I talking to lots of people with Autoimmune disease, rare blood disorders, cancers, liver disease, kidney disease , dementia and brain injuries because going through all l been through. l been either misdiagnosed with these symptoms or given meds that treated something other than what l had. And yes l had some very good medical treatment and some l would do to someone l hated. But God always puts someone there to help you in the time of trouble. And people are so amazed when they see me but l give God all the Praise because he brought me out of what the Devil thought he had. So l here to help others and carry the message.if he has done it for me he can do the same for you. So hang on in there and don't forget to Ask Questions it your health. And if you are only in healthcare for the money than that's the wrong professional go to the stock markert. or maybe the lottery and maybe you will get Lucky. Medicine is to help and be compassionate and also have Mercy on others because it could be you next. God Bless You

Hello Lisa, Woah! That was a long, convoluted, confusing message. All I can say to it is that a nutritionist or any health advisor should never tell a client/patient that he or she is going to get you off the medications your doctor prescribed...especially for someone like you who had serious health concerns. You said a lot of important things; Ask questions, talk openly to your doctor, be aware of meds that don't agree with you, be aware also of side effects of those drugs, consult credible sites like Mayo Clinic and if you have a hunch or suspicion about what may be causing problems such as magnesium, bring that to the doctor's attention. That's what I got out of your post. Good luck to you! You're on the right track!

@ellamster That is so crazy for a doctor to tell you that you can take all that magnesium. I am sorry there is a limit. Everything has limits. I take magnesium, calcium and zinc. And a probiotic and l took my prescription meds and supplements to my doctor and he signed off on it. But look up the levels of daily intake of magnesium. You can go to AARP or GoodRX. And also on the Mayo Clinic website. I think the have a book on supplements. You can look on there diet plan. And you can also go to a nutritionist. I go to the health food store and l have a nutritionist who tell me with supplements to get. I haven't seen her since my emergency surgery but will see her this weekend. And if you doctor doesn't mind you taking supplements then he might tell what will work. I take iron, fish oil, vitamin d and also milk thistle for my liver. God Bless!!!

Hello! Here is a cut and paste from the site Healthline on magnesium dosages: 'The RDA for magnesium is 310–420 mg for adults depending on age and gender. If you require a supplement, dosage recommendations can vary depending on your needs, such as to improve constipation, sleep, muscle cramps or depression. Most studies found positive effects with daily doses of 125–2,500 mg.'
Most of us are magnesium deficient. There are different kinds of magnesium. I take 350mg of magnesium CITRATE at bedtime for constipation since I have that kind of IBS where I must keep regular. More would cause diarrhea. But there are other forms where one can take more, depending on one's needs.
I would say that of all your excellent supplements IRON is the one to be concerned about. My understanding is that one should not take it unless one is anemic. In adulthood, unless a person has heavy periods, cancer or some condition that causes anemia, it is not advised to take IRON. For one, IRON can be terribly constipating!

Considering your history, it could be a good idea to get yourself checked out at the hospital. Here in Canada where we are famous for no cost medical care but also famous for long emergency room waiting times, if it is heart related, a person are seen immediately (at no cost, of course). I hope it's the same for you...if you need to go. Better safe than sorry.

Emergency room visits have long lines here too (near Saratoga Springs NY) unless you have heart problems.
