IBS challenges
Hi .... I don't think there's a group for this, so I thought I'd try you all. I have been prone to IBS with constipation since my divorce 12 years ago - we were married for 40 years and I felt as though I'd been thrown away. My gastro-intestinal doctor suggested Metamucil, which seemed to work. Between then and now I've had 3 moves, one about 4 hours from where I'd lived for 30 years, a TKR and also a revision, am on several psychotropic medications for cyclothymia, and just feel awful. Well, I'm 73 and have had my teeth removed in order to get dentures .... there's been quite a harang with this and it's been over a year since I've been eating soft and pureed foods .... cream of wheat, soups (pureed), pureed spaghetti, if I do eat a piece of fruit it has to be pureed, but I try not to. It's been a long haul. Well, now I'm packing to move to a low-income apartment closer to my girls, and the IBS has become the diahrrhea form ..... OMG, it's awful. I'm afraid to go out. I don't know what to do anymore. I'm new down here and only have an Internist, but with moving that will have to change. I need the name of a good gastro-enterologist at the hospital I will be using. In the meantime, does anyone have any suggestions for me? I'm forced to use pads right now "just in case" ..... I know this is anxiety and tension, but it's got to stop.
Thanks much,
abby

I have a disease called Adrenaleukodystrophy and was also diagnosed with IBS.I feel like a prisoner in my home, never knowing when I will have a accident. I am embarresed when I have no control. I live on Bentyl and Imodium. And stress compounds everything. If anyone has a solution. I hope you get well.
I'm 69 years old and have had IBS with panic attacks my whole adult life. It has stopped me from doing so many things. When I've had to go places; it would make me so anxious. I've been check by quite a few doctors over the years and none of the medicines or suggestions have been full proof.
Twelve years ago I divorced my husband of 35 years and have done very little dating because of the IBS with panic attacks. I've wasted my life because of this awful condition and have been a prisoner. Well...that's my story. Is there any words of advise out there for me? I don't have that many years left and I sure would like to get out there and live.
Hi,
I've been suffering from IBS from the past 20 years. I'm on Probiotics now(25 billion CFU). Prior to this I had visited all types of doctors and had enough antibiotics. I was tired of the same medicines being prescribed again and again by different doctors. After a little research on the Internet , I checked the availability of Probiotics on Amazon. From last 5 years I've been on this. However at times the symptoms do get aggravated in spite of diet control and medication. I was wondering if anyone has been facing the same issue and what would be the strength of the probiotic to be consumed and if Keto Diet is good for me. I've put on a good many kilos especially after the lockdown has started in March.
Hello @junita and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect.
I am sorry to hear about your 20 years of dealing with IBS. That is certainly a difficult disorder to live with, isn't it? If you've had IBS for that long of a time your GI doctor has probably already informed you of the Fodmap eating plan. If not, here is a discussion that I started about this eating plan about a month ago. It has helped me a great deal, https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/fodmap-eating-plan/.
Here is a video from a registered dietician at Mayo Clinic regarding this eating plan, https://connect.mayoclinic.org/page/gastroenterology-and-gi-surgery/newsfeed-post/what-exactly-is-the-fodmap-diet-dr-wang-explains/
As my main symptom was abdominal pain and discomfort, I'm wondering what your main symptoms are. If you are comfortable sharing more, junita, is diarrhea your most difficult symptom or are there other symptoms as well?
Hi @junita, you'll notice that I moved your message to this existing discussion called "Your experiences with IBS." I did this so you can connect with other members like @hopeful33250 @crj @jackiem95 @baz10 and others. Like @hopeful33250, I'd be interested in hearing more about what symptoms you find most challenging.
Hi Teresa,
Thanks for getting in touch. My symptoms currently plaguing me are diarrhoea, stomach cramps and flatulence not to omit weight gain. Here, in India, doctors only suggest you a food list . They do not share any eating plan as such.
Hi Colleen,
Thanks for sharing my message with other members on this platform. I suffer mainly from diarrhoea, stomach cramps and flatulence. Moreover, since I'm about to start my Keto diet to reduce the excessive weight that I have gained, I was wondering whether the keto diet is good for people with IBS.
Kijimea Bifidobacterium MIMBb paraprobiotic sold by Amazon is, I’ve heard, the go to probiotic for serious IBS. Look at their website. If you’ve tried it, or
know anyone who has, please post comments here. Thanks! Moo1
@junita - There are so many of us with IBS! It is hard to get a grip on what to do because the body doesn’t always react as predicted. I’m glad to hear that you are planning a keto diet. I started one 2 years ago, successfully losing weight and keeping it off. I found that my insides were much happier on that diet. It definitely helped controlling the carbs.
Good luck! Are you using Imodium for the diarrhea?
@astaingegerdm,- I use Imodium for diarrhoea, but seldom. I keep it stored away in my medicine box and unless and until the symptoms are grave, I do not generally consume it. To control my IBS I've been using probiotics of 25 billion strength. But I just wanted to know if the strength should be increased because at times the diarrhoea and bloating comes back with revenge!!! :)-
