allergic reaction to bone cement

Hope the new knee helps..I too am suffering for 7 years with this new knee replacement but no one can find anything wrong. They x-ray and say all is well. The surgeon said he wished all his patients knees looked this good. I just go home and spend a lot of time crying on the inside.

@torpedo I have the same thing with my right hip replacement. The surgeon who did the replacement can find nothing wrong. But an MRI shows a torn ligament which he refuses to acknowledge is there. A doctor at Mayo confirms the tear and cause of the pain. The tear was done during hip replacement and can't be fixed!

That seems most unusual that the torn ligament can't be repaired..I'm so sorry that you have to surffer in such a way.

Hello, sorry I just saw your post. My pain has been 85% of time on the outer side of rt. Knee by the joint. But would also get pain behind my knee. My knee is still swollen, some days it is very hot to touch, other days not too bad, but it ALWAYS wakes me during the night. I also had my surgeon say, “well, you may be just one of those people that it takes longer to recover or maybe not”. I am so angry. I have seen five other doctors since my last visit with surgeon April 29, 2020. He blew me off taking his phone out of his pocket, saying it was the wife! I wasn’t done asking him questions. None of the five doctors agreed on exactly my issue was, but they all said I needed a revision. The very last dr. Immediately said he wanted allergy testing done! Blew me away when I tested positive!

Hello: I wanted to express my disappointment too. My left TKR was done on October 30, 2019. It has been a year and I still get pain in the knee joint. Also I get pain at the back of the same knee and pain in the hip muscle same side. My surgeon tells me every time that I am one of the kind that is taking longer to heal. He says there is nothing wrong. I went for second opinion to another surgeon and he is telling me the same thing. I am just tired of these doctors who cannot tell you why I am getting pain at the back of the knee.

So, what kind of allergy do you have as you said you tested positive when you did allergy testing. Was curious to know.

Hello, I too found out after 14 mos. post surgery and suffering with severe pain especially at night. The knee and my leg are swollen, hot to the touch and I don’t feel comfortable after sitting for extended periods it hurts as I struggle to get up. After seeing 5 doctors the 6th one sent me for allergy testing. They should make the testing part of the protocol when having ANY JOINT REPLACED! There are many of us in the same boat. These companies that manufacture these prosthetics are aware of this problem but don’t think it’s that bad of a problem...this has been going on for years.
Because of my knee being so weak, I struggled to get out of chairs. I started pushing myself up with my arms and because of doing that I tore my rotator cuff in my right shoulder! Good luck with your situation. I’m afraid that my situation is going to similar to yours. Irish823

The doctor sent me for testing of metals, cements or glue and antibiotics. I tested positive for neomycin sulfate- an antibiotic and the other reaction was to methyl methacrylate. This is in quite a few things, like the glue for artificial nails. And it has at least 25 different names for same thing. It is also in fillings for teeth.

I am also allergic to bone cement. Was resolution have you decided on.
