What's your experience with dialysis? Give & get support here

Posted by Rosemary, Volunteer Mentor @rosemarya, Mar 7, 2019

Dialysis is required if your kidneys don't function adequately on their own. Your doctor will discuss with you the type of dialysis that's best for you. Dialysis treatment is a serious responsibility, You'll need to work closely with your health care team who have experience in managing dialysis. Open communication with your health care team is essential to your overall health.

Fellow patients are a wonderful source of support and practical information because of a shared dialysis experience.
If you are a dialysis patient, or loved one of a patient, what are some things that you have experienced that might be helpful to someone who is new to dialysis? What kind of life adjustments have you had to make? How has it affected your everyday life?

@gingerw. not good news: Just now home from dialysis & going to bed. I was in the OR and under anesthesia when the doctor fell ill and cancelled the surgery. It was too late to get a ride home by the time they got me awake again so neph admitted me overnight then I went to dialysis today to make up for missing yesterday. I go to dialysis again tomorrow and will come home exhausted as usual, eat a bite then go right to bed. I do not know when or even if the dialysis access graft can even be saved or by whom if by anyone. I have no way to get to a vascular surgeon at the other medical center in a nearby town and there's only one other vascular surgeon here in town. Plse wish me luck!

@kamama94 While we can be thankful your surgeon did not try to proceed in the light of his illness, it's gotta be frustrating and unnerving to not know what may happen now. Will someone advocate for you to get the other vascular surgeon in town to help you out?

Hope you can feel my hug of support for you.

@gingerw, my surgeon had his office schedule me for hospital placement of new graft (diidn't say where) which leads me to believe he doesn't think this one can be saved. Clinic working on a referral to other surgeon in town for 2nd opinion. Sigh.

@kamama94, I send my thoughts and I am thankful that there is a Plan B. My own experience with Plan B's has been good.
Hugs and Hope.

@kamama94 Oh, here is hoping that everything will work out the way it is supposed to. And thinking of your first surgeon, that he is recovered soon to take his place on the front lines again. Meanwhile, peace in your heart, my friend.

@kamama94, Well fiddlesticks on the question of whether or not this graft will work! How long before you know whether or not it is working? Glad that there will be other options and I always welcome a second opinion.

Sending you extra calm and doses of serenity during this waiting period. I'm not very predictable with shedding tears but if you need a good Irish shake of the fist in frustration, I'm available and willing!

Have been following along and wishing for your good health! Fell and broke my hip and now have a hip replacement. Thought of you and your recipes so often while inhospitable, trying to find something to eat that tasted like anything. Couldn't believe when your doctor fell ill. Hope you get some folks who know their stuff. Take care.
