Cortisone shots to prolong the surgery for hip replacement
Has anyone had any experience with cortisone shots to hold off on having their hip replaced? Pros and Cons please.

@lioness I am wondering the exact same thing. I will be looking forward to hearing what your doctor says. Where would you be getting the shot?
@sueinmn So, it doesn't travel through your bloodstream and possibly affect other areas? I would love to get shots in both hips for my bursitis but am afraid to. Of course my hips are involved in my osteoporosis too. I should check with my osteoporosis endocrinologist, I feel more comfortable asking her than the physiatrist who would be giving me the shot.

Hi JK - I would probably ask both. Yes, of course some of the cortisone travels within the body, but the purpose of placing the injection at the point of inflammation is to minimize the involvement of the rest of your body. The dose is smaller than you get by taking oral steroids. Here is some info about injections compared to oral steroids: https://www.mayoclinic.org/tests-procedures/cortisone-shots/about/pac-20384794 and https://www.arthritis-health.com/treatment/injections/cortisone-injections-steroid-injections
Here is some specific information about cortisone and osteoporosis: https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/occasional-cortisone-injections-unlikely-to-have-negative-affect-on-bones/

@contentandwell I will let you know going Wed .
Thanks for the links, @sueinmn I had planned to research that myself but just hadn't had time yet. It does sound reassuring that it should not affect my osteoporosis but I will check on that since the osteoporosis is in my hips and the shots would also be in my hips.
I found it interesting that it says prednisone in doses of 10mg or more will affect bones but I have only been taking 5mg a day yet the endocrinologist I went to, Director of the Bone Density Center at MGH, felt that the prednisone had been the cause of my osteoporosis progressing.
@lioness I will be looking forward to hearing what you find out on Wednesday.

JK - Long term or repeated use of oral steroids (like my daughter has used for years for intractable asthma, or my friend used for RA) is one of the culprits in osteoporosis, even though the daily dose is relatively low. I learned it years ago, and have never been willing to stay on prednisone except during acute asthma or bronchitis because we have a 4 generation history of significant osteoporosis. My daughter is being switched from prednisone to a biologic for her asthma. So far, in spite of everything, my bone density looks quite good, but hers is beginning to show early osteopenia at only age 40.

Does anyone have any experience or information on PRP shots vs cortisone shots to prolong hip replacements? I've been having pain in my right hip for quite awhile but it's only at night due to being a side sleeper. I sent my knee replacement surgeon's PA a message on the patient portal and asked if they thought it might help. I've an appointment Monday for an X-ray of my hips and a consult with their non-surgical team to discuss conservative measures for the hip pain Dec 21st.
Hello John,
I can only comment on PRP injections, injected into my knees, best thing l did was a big stab in unknown but well paid off. Gave me extra 7 yrs, had my first TKR June this year. I had 15 injections 7 in L 8 in Right knee. Pain free CT guided rested afterwards worked next day Nursing. Hoping this is some help. Injections definitely helped me.
Hi John - I was faced with the same issue last winter, and my hip surgeon, whom I trust, diagnosed bursitis & sciatic irritation. We decided to try exercise & ice first - fortunately it works - as long as I continue daily stretching as directed. I can sleep on my left hip now - just wish my left shoulder would cooperate - 2 months of therapy & it is only marginally improved. He said if pain continued he would use cortisone. In his opinion, there is not enough evidence for PRP after healing yet. He says some of his partners do use it in the healing phase, especially if pain persists.

Thanks Sue!
Yes, my Dr said PRP and Stem Cell was not that effective for the hip. I have had 2 cortisone injections and while it helped take the edge off, the pain us still there. I can't have the surgery now for 3 months after the cortisone so I hope the pain doesn't come back full force!
