Why am I not losing weight

Posted by mahnoorra @mahnoorra, Mar 4, 2019

I have a very healthy diet and lifestyle, however I do not seem to be seeing results. Why?

Does anyone find that carb loading is part of depression? I have found myself using carbs, unfortunately, when my depression is at it's worst. And usually the carb cravings hit at night, Does anyone else find that happens to them? I can be perfect during the day but if my depression is worse on some days, I just crave and crave carbs before bed. NOT happy about it.

Yes, depression can trigger sugar craving/carb craving. I suggest that you put some routines into your evening. Drinking herbal tea, adding a sweetner like a stevia product, warm, fragrant and soothing, can distract your body and mind into comfort. Keep a journal of when you are depressed and hungry, see if there is a correlation between those times/days. Go to bed at a regular hour. Note that you may have more craving later in the evening. Make specific rules for yourself to follow. No fruits after 7pm, no bread after 5pm, no cheese after 4pm, tea only after 8pm. You can also say you can eat anything you want after 7pm but portion is one ounce. No more than one ounce.
Are you on an anti depressant?
FYI, I am not an MD or a nurse.

You can also make a rule that you are only allowed carbs after you run in place for 5 minutes. Various activities will reduce the desire for these foods, and make it easier to resist.

@mahnoorra I have been following Pahla B Fitness in YouTube. She does workouts for women "of a certain age". One thing she says she has learned is that as we get into menopausal age that we need to workout more moderately. When we workout too aggressively it stresses our bodies causing us to retain the weight.
I don't know your age, but this could be something to think about for you.
Best wishes!

Not anymore....the two I tried made me so sick I could barely get through my work day...and rather than go through another possibility I made the decision to just gut it out and do what I could to maintain a semblance of normal.

Hi! Do you record everything you eat? I mean every single bite? My husband and I started doing this in 2017, using an app called MyFitnessPal, then we switched to one called MyNetDiary because we liked it better. Both free.
We were absolutely GOBSMACKED how many calories we were eating! Once we began eating the correct amount and kept tracking, then we could eat less reliably and lose weight. My husband lost 60 pounds over about 8 months. I lost 16. We are at healthy weights and have maintained for over 2 yrs so far.
Exercise wise, we walk an hour a day with our dog. That's it.
Good luck to you!
Theresa

Hi @jodeej, I'm going to take a look at the Pahla B Fitness on YouTube. I'm assuming that my local Y might be closing soon due to the virus problem and I'll need some program to do at home. Won't be as much fun but I'll need to do something.

Oh so many things!! She is very fun and explains her reasoning for everything. She does talk through the workout and there isn't any music. It took me awhile to get used to it, but I've come to enjoy it. It's like working out with a friend and you chat the whole time. Another thing I enjoy, is that her over 50 workouts are only 20-30 minutes. She has them divided between weight loss or body shaping so you can choose what you want to do.

Santolina, I am so sorry that you have had this experience, no therapeutic benefit from antidepressants, and complications of work, diet, etc. Life is tough and when depression grabs a hold, tougher still. Many people who haven't had this experience, really do not understand. Try hard as you can to validate yourself, not to think harshly of yourself, and cut yourself some slack. I remember an interview of the woman who played Wonder Woman on television. She had that tiny waistline. She said her agent made her jump on a trampoline for ten minutes for every bite of a brownie she ate. Physical activity MAY help depression, will work out calories. I find that a very pleasing snack, to be any kind of roasted nut, if you can have them. Always reach out to support networks, just being taken seriously can help to staunch the pain of depression... there are a lot of us out here. Right now i would love a fresh bag of potato chips, that I don't currently own. Thank goodness! My heart to you.

Also, you can try to distract your mind from food using: burning candle, perfume, soak your feet in some warm salt water... xoxo
