Has anyone had a tight band feeling after total knee replacement?

Posted by mhort1213 @mhort1213, Feb 28, 2019

I am 8 weeks post TKR and have had this very tight band around my knee since week one. My Dr at 6 wks says it is normal and will go away. Has anyone else had this and did it go away and when?

Hi Sweede536. I am sorry you are having so much trouble with your knee replacement. Have you thought about going back to the surgeon who did your surgery? He or she might be able to help you. It's a tough replacement. I had a shoulder replace and that was really tough.

Thanks. By all means, I have rerurned to surgeon multiple times. Also sent emails to their portal. The emails are a very helpful option.

@sweede536 I agree with @lilypaws Please do go back to your surgeon, or get another opinion from a different orthopedic surgeon at a different facility. Finding the best qualified surgeon for a second opinion can be difficult but if you go to a major medical center you should be able to find one. You should not still be having that much pain.
I have had two TKRs and not had that problem at all.

Specifically, has anyone dealt with IT Band
It’s so common I’m surprised Mayo Clinic doesn’t have a separate group discussion of it under it’s correct name. It’s common in runners and bikers and especially after TKR
If anyone out there has some good suggestions please pass them along

I was 6months out and started having problems in my other knee after becoming more active again - IT band. Was sent back to PT for a bit with specific exercises (of course different ones) and rollings really helped. Now 10months and still doing exercises of course, but doing good 🙂 Just walked a 10k saturday.

I had my left knee done 2 years ago and the stiffness and pain at night is still there. I had my right knee done 3 months ago. I had tightness, pinching and and stiffness also. Does anyone recommend taking collagen pills for joints and how many mg? Or is there anything else to take besides ibeprophen or tylenol? Thanks for any help

Hi @janicemmccarthy, welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. You'll notice that I moved your message to this existing discussion called "Has anyone had a tight band feeling after total knee replacement?" I did this so you can meet other members who are talking about this same issues weeks, month, and, like you, even years after a total knee replacement.

Janice, have you tried using a pillow between your legs for sleeping? How is your activity level and range of motion during the day?

Hi @janicemmccarthy, I would like to add my welcome to Connect along with @colleenyoung and other members. Sorry to hear about the stiffness and pain at night. I had my right knee replaced a year ago April and it's a little stiff and I have issues sleeping at night because I'm a side sleeper. I mostly sleep on my right side until my hip starts hurting and then I switch to the other side for awhile. There was a while when my knees would rub and cause pain. I started using one of the small My Pillow Roll & GoAnywhere pillows - https://www.mypillow.com/rngbogo.html. I like it because it's small and easy to put between my legs.

My wife and I have used collagen powder mix daily for a couple of years. She likes it because it has helped her fingernails become stronger and not break anymore. We get it on Amazon but I'm sure you could get it anywhere and it mixes with anything - Collagen Hydrolysate - https://www.amazon.com/Great-Lakes-Gelatin-Hydrolysate-Unflavored/dp/B005KG7EDU/ref=sr_1_7
