Recipes, Food Tips, Healthy Eating & More

Posted by Debbra Williams, Alumna Mentor @debbraw, Feb 22, 2019

Some of the members of the Gratitude Discussion Group were interested in having a place to share recipes and food ideas. I’m hoping that we can use this thread as a place to have that kind of discussion. I’d love to hear your ideas for quick meals, comfort food, healthy snacks, and more.

Personally, I’ve just been through a bad reaction to one of my medications that left me with a very queasy stomach. I would love to hear ideas – or recipes – that might be used when you need to get something on your stomach, but don’t want to overdo it.

Hopefully, this thread will even be a place where we can share recipes for special treats and yummy rewards. It doesn’t always have to be healthy!

I’d love to hear from members who have been part of other discussions AND from new members who have good ideas, recipes and food tips to share. I’m excited to see who might start us off here with an awesome food suggestion!

Lioness- Good morning. I have begun drinking Turmeric and taking supplements everyday now. I found a fantastic chai turmeric tea by RISHI- https://www.rishi-tea.com/product/organic-turmeric-chai-caffeine-free-herbal-blend/caffeine-free-botanical. My husband even loves it. And the pills have every ingredient needed. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0112M60KI?ref=ppx_pt2_dt_b_prod_image

What improvements have you found? I seem to have more pep and since this has only been a couuple of weeks I'm hoping that other things are happening inside of me that I'm not aware of.
Have you increased your intake of Turmeric ?

Hi,

Turmeric is great for inflammation..I sprinkle the powdered turmeric over veggies or put it in soup. I have been drinking Japanese Matcha powder as a tea or sometimes I put the powder in applesauce. I settled on a brand I like called UJIDO which is a ceremonial brand. The good matcha powder is not cheap but a little goes a long way.

It’s an acquired taste. I sometimes drink it as a tonic , as a sipping tea I need honey in it. It has 3 times the caffeine as regular green tea so I don’t drink it much after 2. However, it doesn’t make you jittery. There’s a plethora of benefits associated with it due to the fact that’s it’s rich in antioxidants and vitamins. It claims to boost metabolism and burn calories, improve cognition, improves mood and make you more alert and energetic and is great for immunity and heart health.

The powder is necessary...not the tea bags because there is so little of the matcha in it. You use hot , not boiling water which will destroy the ground leaves. I always have it before my 3 weekly gym classes and usually have it about 5 times a week. But do your research on the different brands. Can be found in places like Whole Foods, Sprouts or health food stores.

I do feel more energetic and focused but I have to say that my diet is a very green one...spinach, kale ...full of veggies and fruit...and at age 78 I have no aches or pains (I do exercise)....my skin and hair look good..my weight is low. I have good genes which is a major factor. I’ve also been eating like this for a long time. I have crappy hearing, the beginning of macular degeneration which has not changed in 5 years and osteoporosis which has improved but nothing organically wrong. Both parents had basically healthy long living families and siblings so I was off to a good start.

I love this healthy living topic because of all the people who have such an interest in living life as it is meant to be lived despite any physical limitations or medical conditions. Reading about the experience of others who offer insight into their philosophy and who offer suggestions and recipes makes me want to go out and shout at everyone I know who does not care what they put into their bodies and then moan about things they can actually take some control over....and change. Ooh....here she goes again.
And the people on this forum (other topics too) seem to have such a great sense of humor and basic kindness that comes through.

Fl Mary is making personal pizza tonight on a Naan (mushrooms, tomatoes, spinach, avacado) along with a good Cabernet and the ever popular dark chocolate .I’ll be jogging my way over to the oven soon....(it’s not that far)

Yes, Almond milk is what I drink most but can only have 2 cups. If I have cows milk I drink non-fat usually but occasionally I’ll get courages and have 1% sometimes if I become to rebellious I’ll have 2%. When my friend was here she gave me some whole milk, it was like drinking cream. If almond milk, I drink the one with more calories, don’t like the non-fat equivalent. I’ve never seen oat milk only Almond, soy cashew & coconut.
They have zero calorie, non fat drinks but I’m curious if they are similar to diet sodas that are worse than the the regular stuff???

I doubt that nothing is as bad as diet sodas. I think the nut milk is really OK, still has protein. I just recently tried the Oat milk.

Is the oat milk better tasting? Higher in calories and sugar?

Hi
No, not just that I don’t like it. I suppose I don’t like it mostly because it’s so painful to do. I didn’t have so much trouble when I was taking Fentanyl and Percodan. Now I just take Percodan but haven’t taken any in 2 months. Maybe that’s why I bellyache so much, lol. I use to clean the house from top to bottom and cook everyday. As far as walks go No, I don’t get out. I walk around the house mostly. My chronic pain limits me. Feet, legs shoulders, neck & back. I’m suppose to have both shoulders replaced and back surgery which I have so far refused. My overall general health is good.

Morning Jake- I'm worried about your general health now Jake, or have you just been kidding about your not wanting to do much at home? Are you getting out for walks?

No, I’m not kidding about doing things. I use to clean the house top to bottom and cook up a storm. My Neuropathy has gotten worse from the bottom of my feet to just above my waist. Both shoulders need replaced due to severe Arthritis from years of falling and surgeries. I’m limited to the time I can stand.

@imallears Mary, your message is good for anyone here, not just Leonard! Making food a healthy game could be fun. We all need food to survive, definitely, and that is what makes it difficult for people with eating or food disorders. Leonard, my dad always said he never met a cookie or cheesecake he didn't like. Towards the end of his life he wanted Panda brand black licorice. [Myself, I just want Good N Plenty]. Sometimes I still really desire what is a no-no on this renal diet, like a banana or good navel Orange.

Haha, FUN, we have a different definition of fun.
Why can’t you have bananas or oranges? What does the potassium do or not do.
