Hello

Does anyone know what the difference is services why’s is between a doctor on staff at Mayo versus Mayo affiliated? Wondering if you get the same quality service and diagnostics? Thank you

Hi @jordanabrams30, I think a Mayo affiliated doctor has access to Mayo Clinic resources and can consult with specialties within Mayo Clinic if I am understanding what I read.

I also found an article from 2015 that provides some insight from the affiliated doctors perspective.

A doctor on staff at the Mayo Clinic may also be on the faculty at the Medical School, and may be conducting research and supervising medical students and residents as well. This doctor is also on the staff of the Mayo Teaching Hospital. In my opinion this would be the highest level of professional expertise possible at the Mayo Clinic.

A Mayo Affiliated doctor will not be on the faculty, or conducting research, supervising medical students or residents. A Mayo Affiliated doctor will be on the staff of a Mayo Hospital.

Some of my Duke doctors are on the staff at Duke Medical Center. Some of my Duke doctors are Duke affiliated doctors. All of my Duke doctors are part of the MyChart system, and have full access to my medical records.

My Duke Immunologist, has an appointment at the Medical School, does research and supervises medical students and residents, in addition to having her medical practice. She is very busy, to say the least.

All of the staff, medical and non-medical of all Duke hospitals and medical clinics are employees of Duke University.

Duke University is the second largest private employer in North Carolina.

Hi @jordanabrams30
A Mayo staff physician is a permanent Mayo Clinic employee. The term “Mayo-affiliated physician” is a broad term. It could apply to visiting faculty, alumni physicians, Mayo Clinic Care Network physicians (as John mentions above), etc.

Members of the Mayo Clinic Care Network connect with Mayo Clinic through a number of products and services. The resources continue to expand and today include:

- eConsults. Providers within the care network can connect electronically with Mayo Clinic specialists and subspecialists to ask questions about a patient's care. The consultation is documented in the patient's medical record. There is no additional cost to the patient.
- AskMayoExpert. This point-of-care tool gives providers access to Mayo-vetted information, including disease management protocols, care guidelines, treatment recommendations and reference materials. The information is available on desktop computers or mobile devices 24/7.
- eBoard Conferences. Members can observe and participate in live, interactive video conferences where Mayo multidisciplinary teams and network members discuss management of current complex cases. Current offerings include access to eTumor Boards, as well as our Inflammatory Bowel Disease eBoard.
- Inpatient Telephone Consults. An Inpatient Telephone Consult is an informal telephone conversation, provider to provider, regarding the treatment of a hospitalized patient that requires semi-urgent to urgent intervention. There is no additional cost to the patient.
- Health Care Consulting. Network members can consult with Mayo Clinic experts in patient care, human resources, finance, and other administrative and operational areas. Members customize their own consulting plans to support their unique strategic priorities.
- Patient Education Library. Members have access to Mayo Clinic's library of patient education materials, which include 2,500 pieces in English and a select number in Spanish.
- Archived Mayo Clinic Grand Rounds. Presentations by Mayo Clinic providers and faculty address clinical care and health care delivery topics. Continuing medical education credit is available by viewing Grand Rounds offerings.

@elained, Mayo-affiliated physicians may be part of research projects.

Jordan, I hope this helps clarify and helps with your decision-making and choice of physician.
