Hearing Loss: Come introduce yourself and connect with others

Welcome to the Hearing Loss group on Mayo Clinic Connect.
This is a welcoming, safe place where you can meet people living with hearing loss, and friends and family supporters. Whether you were born deaf or hard of hearing, experienced hearing loss after birth or with aging, it helps to connect with others. Together we can learn from each other, support one another and share stories about living with hearing loss, coping with challenges and celebrating milestones.

Let’s chat. Why not start by introducing yourself? What is your hearing loss experience? Got a question, tip or story to share?

Hello @dwi and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. I see you are looking to connect with members who may have information to share on hearing aids, and more specifically those for SSHL.

Like @barb asked, can you confirm what SSHL is, as I am not familiar either?

@dwi Hearing aids really do not deal with accents except with how those who speak use different frequencies of sound to form words.. there are adjustments on hearing aids to work with the frequencies but since accents are usually a function of not hearing what you are used to.... it is the brain that also has to be trained ... hopefully the one speaking has to be reminded that you are hard of hearing and perhaps written conversation would be easier or if the accent speaker could speak slower... Depending upon your smart phone, you might record the voice or even use voice to text apps..

Hello, I lost complete earring in my left ear following a trip to Southeast Asia 7 years ago. Doctors could not tell me what caused the loss, but it would not come back. I have since retired in Thailand. It is very hard for me to understand people from other countries due to their strong accents. I wear a set of 5 year old Phonak croc. Do hearing aids make it more difficult to get pass accents? What is the latest/best hearing aids for SSHL?

@dwi Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. You had sudden hearing loss primarily in one ear? Are you using two hearing aids, or do you have a bicross hearing aid that allows you to hear from both directions? Hearing aids do keep improving, but the best hearing aid is only as good as the person who tests you and does the fitting appropriately. I have sensorineural hearing loss, but it was progressive, not sudden. Accents are very difficult for me to understand. That is due to the hearing loss not the hearing aids though. Let us know more about your experiences.

I had sudden lost in my left heart following a trip to Laos. I am currently using bi cross by Phonak. The current set is approximately 5 years old, so I’m due an upgrade when I return to the states hopefully next year once the vaccines take affect.

Hello @december1011 and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect, where members give and get support. I am sorry to hear about your hearing loss in your right ear due to Meniere's Disease. I wanted to share that there is a group specific to Meniere's Disease where members are also talking about hearing loss as a result, if that discussion interests you: https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/menieres-disease-2/

How long ago did you lose hearing in your right ear?

Well said. Lip reading may help some to offset accents, but easier for some is use of small handy dry erase board.
