Hearing Loss: Come introduce yourself and connect with others

Welcome to the Hearing Loss group on Mayo Clinic Connect.
This is a welcoming, safe place where you can meet people living with hearing loss, and friends and family supporters. Whether you were born deaf or hard of hearing, experienced hearing loss after birth or with aging, it helps to connect with others. Together we can learn from each other, support one another and share stories about living with hearing loss, coping with challenges and celebrating milestones.

Let’s chat. Why not start by introducing yourself? What is your hearing loss experience? Got a question, tip or story to share?

You can never ask too many questions when at the audiologists. You must be your own advocate. The audiologist can't tell what you're hearing. And when hearing aids are new the user can't even evaluate them well right away. I have even know an audiologist to give a wrong answer about haw telecoils work. Hearing aids are complex these days. I bet most folks don't use half the features they get on high end hearing aids unless they have severe to profound hearing loss and depend heavily on their hearing aids.

So, when you get new hearing aids "get it right". It is the one shot you have at satisfaction for the coming years. My first pair of hearing aids were about worthless. They gave me a bad impression of hearing aids that took many years to overcome. The audiologist told me they were "right" and I didn't know the difference. I just knew I did't like them. I was right and the audiologist was wrong but I didn't know that at the time.

Thanks, so maybe they first place to start it to get Sirius installed. I had one in my truck but will just have it transferred. If I enjoy Sirius then maybe I won’t need the tapes.

First time user of this sight and appreciate the responses. I've definitely thought about transferring my Sirius radio from truck to car and after Covid when I'm shopping again, will do this.

For the past 6 months I have been experiencing tinnitus. I have had a hearing test with minimal loss. The doctor said little can be done for tinnitus but it is driving me crazy especially at bedtime. I would welcome any helpful suggestions. Thanks

I have moderate hearing loss with tinnitus, no hearing aids though. I have been taking Lipoflavinoid over the counter for a year. It doesn't take it away but in my words "calms' it. Before using this I read the reviews of people and decided to give it a try. Some it helped and some it didn't. I take 2 pills in the morning and 2 at night but starting is more. I've been debating about hearing aids especially with tinnitus.

I have tinnitus and "moderate" hearing loss and am in my trial period with expensive hearing aids ($3,000 each) and so far, despite a tinnitus-related sound from the hearing aids, it does not help the tinnitus.

For tinnitus which I've had for as long as I can remember I've asked different Ear Dr and they just don't know how to get rid of it so I found taken a herbal called Mullein Leaf calms it down a lot and isn't as expensive as Lipoflavanoid

I'm not sure if this is where to ask this question. When I receive emails each day that say for example "Hearing Loss - 8 updates", are those 8 updates in some particular place or is there a way to identify those 8 updates? @sag

Good question, @sag. You are referring to the Digest. The Digest is a summary of activity that you can choose to receive either daily or weekly (or never). Beside each group you follow, the past activity (updates) is posted. Scroll down the email to see the activity details, for example if a new discussion was posted or replies to discussions. This article explains in more detail.

My hearing aids totally erased my tinnitus but they are not cheap. My insurance would cover some of the cost but I prefer to stay with the provider I've had for many years. I noticed my hearing loss while I was still in high school.

What specific hearing aids do you have? Is your loss severe or profound? One ear? Or two?
