Electric Shocks anywhere in my body

Posted by ftlamont @ftlamont, Feb 2, 2019

Ever since I was a child (I'm now 55) I have had what feels what I would describe as electrical shocks. They have the intensity of a bee sting but suddenly vanish in a second or two. They can be pretty intense with sometimes making me yell out from the pain. The pain can happen anytime and can show up in two places at the same time - like my toe and the side of my rib at the same time. It can be literally anywhere - from an eye, cheek, toes, legs, arms, chest, feet, head and even private areas. It's become more intense in the last few years and I'm starting to worry where this is going.

I really haven't found where someone would describe it this way - if anyone can shed some light on this, that would be great. Thanks!

Hello @ftlamont, welcome to Connect. I have read similar descriptions of your pain here on Connect, although many of the members that have talked about it spoke more about it in their scalp. However, I think it may be a discussion you may find worth checking out, you can read through some of those posts and jump in where you feel comfortable here, https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/electric-shock-type-pain-in-my-scalp/. @ftlamont, is there any area on your body that is more frequent or more painful where these occur?

If you haven't, I would suggest you see a neurologist. It sounds like your nerves are firing, specifically, your sensory nerves, the ones that give off pain signals. They may have some kind of damage, as you really do not have bee stings, but only sensations of them. That means your sensory nerves are not working correctly.

I have exactly the same types of shooting pains like you.
Sometimes they’re in the most ridiculous spots on my body, you can’t imagine.
They also make me yell in pain when they occur, and it makes my poor dog leave the room.
I’ve mentioned this to my neurologist, and he attributes it to my CIDP.
I usually put a salonpas pain patch on the area if I can, or use CBD ointment, hoping it will make it stop right away.
Occasionally that shooting stabbing pain can last for hours, and other times just minutes.
I also take Ibuprofen 400 mg and that can make it a little more bearable.
