Shingrix and peripheral neuropathy

Posted by joannerhodes @joannerhodes, Feb 1, 2019

4 days after my 2nd Shingrix vaccination, I suddenly developed intense peripheral neuropathy in both feet...for the first time in my life...anyone else?

@hopeful33250 Teresa, your handle says it all...hopeful. I'm real sorry for the pain your experiencing. I can not imagine those lesions. I'll tell you this....I had a severe bout of Chilblains last year and got through it although at the time, it was unimaginable with sores, burning, itching, swelling. Burning is a force and it takes great mental toughness to see it through. Believe it or not...last night my feet were intensly burning to the point that I wanted to give up, exhausted from fighting so much but, I thought of my friends here on Connect and the challenges we all face. I was motivated to get through it. These miseries may come and go, some may linger but, we are tough and stronger together. I hope someone here steps up and answer you about TENS unit help. Do you have a TENS unit? I say go for it, try it, you have nothing to lose. Also, I hope your neurologist provides suggestions for better help while you weather this storm. My best wishes, coming your way. 😊 Hang in there.
Rachel

Hi @rwinney, No I have not tried a Tens Unit yet. I'll talk to my neurologist next week to see what she thinks. I have a friend who is willing to let me borrow hers to see how it works for me. She has neuropathy (other than from Shingles) and says it is good. If it works I'll undoubtedly get one for myself. Thanks for your kindness and compassion, Rachel, you are a wonderful gift to our Connect community.

I now have burning feet and legs after the second Shingrix injection. I had general dizziness first for a month and now what appears to be peripheral neuropathy. I have my first consultation with a neurologist on Oct 6, 2020. I am wondering how everyone else is doing. How many out there have had this kind of a reaction to the Shingrix. I filled a formal report.

@dont I’m sorry you are going through this. I never thought of actually filing a report with the FDA as I read all these terrible stories. I hope people are doing that. Can they give you anything to deal with these terrible after effects?

The Shingles Shots that I had received from a national pharmacy did not have any side effects except a sore arm for a few days...

Thank you. I have not been prescribed any medication yet since I have not seen the neurologist. I just take some ibuprofen when needed and pray deeply. 🙏🙏

Hi @dont
Your Mayo name of "dont" must stand for "don't get a shingrix shot". I can not believe all the odd things that seem to be causing people to develop neuropathy these days. It's becoming an epidemic of sorts. I don't remember this happening to people back 50 or 60 years ago. I wonder what gives? All kinds of things are causing peripheral neuropathy now. Weird.

Hi Hank, my name is Don...not meant to say don't get the Shingrix vaccination, but do want this evaluated very thoroughly to see if there is an explanation for a connection.

I worked for a major pharmaceutical company for over 30 years, and I can absolutely tell you that your reaction to the shot needs to be reported to the FDA. Docs don’t like to get involved with the paperwork to report an adverse reaction. Check with the FDA yourself to see what the next step is.
