Heart palpitations with anxiety? If so, what to do?

Posted by danybegood1 @danybegood1, Nov 19, 2017

Does anyone ever have heart palpitations when they are experiencing anxiety? If so, what helps you stop them? I had a heart attack last year. Should I be concerned? Dany

Thank you for the reply. I have went through counseling and have the breathing techniques. Prozac has helped me the most along with counseling. I do exercise regularly but have a high stress job which brings out my palpitations on my anxiety. I really wanted to hear the the palpitations are from anxiety which is what my counselor and cardiologist have said; just need more reassurance that there is nothing wrong with my heart and this is a normal reaction to anxiety. Thank you again! Clint.

@clintshriver I also welcome you to our caring group .If your Dr @cardiologist said it's not your heart I'm a retired nurse and can tell you stress can make you feel like your having symptoms of a heart attack or if you have a weak area in your body stress will be more prominent there so take @hopeful33250 advice and when you feel it coming on ,stop and breath deep!y till you feel better Outside of exercise try to find other outlets ,long walks in the woods of beach I don't know where you live I use to go to a close botanical garden this all helps get rid of stress. Hope some of these ideas help

@clintshriver I know you're relieved that this is a stress reaction, but that will affect your health. Is your job worth enduring this stress? I know that isn't always easy to change. You can find a way to gain resilience. I also know it's possible to beat anxiety and unravel the reasons it happens to you. Think about this- as babies we don't have fears. We learn fear. You can chose to unlearn the fear by figuring out how your current situation is triggering an old fear, and you can process those old feelings with the wisdom you now have. This is what I did myself. My anxiety was triggered by medical procedures and I needed major surgery.

I can recommend a pair of books by a Mayo doctor about Resilience and overcoming stress and anxiety. I didn't have these before my surgery, but they explained to me why my methods worked to overcome my fears. https://marketplace.mayoclinic.com/shop/healthy-lifestyle/book/mayo-clinic-stress-management-combo_752700 The Guide to Stress Free Living is very in-depth, and the Handbook for Happiness is like a workbook.

Here is my Mayo Clinic Story about overcoming my fear https://sharing.mayoclinic.org/2019/01/09/using-the-art-of-medicine-to-overcome-fear-of-surgery/

Just believe that you can do it, and you can find a way. You'll need to ask yourself a lot of "why" questions about where your feelings come from and look for different ways to think about past experiences. Going to counseling is good. I did that too to make sure I was on the right track. You've been given a gift in that you don't have heart disease... now take that gift and work on everything you can to keep it that way. I totally understand. I've been there too, and I am the daughter of a man who died of heart disease which I saw from beginning to end and how much stress affected him because of things he could not let go of. So put yourself and your health first, and don't give away your power of good health to stress.

Hello. I’ve been diagnosed with anxiety. It started over a year ago. I initially noticed my heart skipping a beat, the feeling of blood rushing through my body and my muscles twitching all over. I went to the ER 5 times, ekg each time and told nothing wrong. Long story short, I’m told I have heart palpitations from anxiety. Anyone else experience heart palpitations with anxiety? My sternum also crack just like you crack your knuckles. I’m currently on Prozac for this and it helps a ton, but I still get palpitations and get freaked out from them. Thanks in advance.

My 18 year old son is going through this right now. He gets chest pain, heart palpitations, he can feel his heart beat and feels its beating hard. He had a normal but slightly abnormal ekg yesterday. What that means is because of his age, his body type is very slender , not any fat between the heart and the chest he had a strong heartbeat. The dr is one of the best cardiologists here. He said he sees this all the time in boys my sons age but to be sure he has ordered an ultra sound of my sons heart. Then we will know for sure whether it's the panic and anxiety or if there really is a heart issue. I'm happy your ekg was normal 😁

I have had panic and anxiety attacks for 25 years. Your body goes into a fight or flight mode and your internal alarm system goes off. It's like if you were walking down a path in the forest and you see a bear. My ekg
Is always normal. I have some level of anxiety every day. Its always there and never completely goes away. I've been
Told by many doctors I just cant completley relax. I'm in some sort of the flight or fight mode all the time. I've learned to deal with it by slow deep breaths in through the
Nose and out through the mouth over and over. Your body
Cannot be panicked and calm at the same time. So I do the deep breathing over and over to get to a calmer place. Lavender baths help. Lavandar or chamomile tea. Calming sounds like of the waves of the ocean or the rain etc..you can find these on YouTube. I do Other things to but my message here is very long already. But the biggest thing that is helped me is the the
Anxiety and phobia workbook by edward J. Bourne. Amazing book. You can find it on thriftbooks.com for $4.50 versus $18.00 or higher other places dr bourne has
Other excellent books to. Hope I helped someone. 😁

@anitamarie That is all good information thanks I would like to suggest one other thing I do for what ever problem you have but with mind issues . I have anxiety attacks more years ago then now but I did get overwhelmed a little while ago and emailing one of our mentoers helped just to talk and get it down on paper or internet as it was but writing things down to get the behavior out tell those ugly beasties to go jump in the lake . I also like tapping do you do this? Tappingsolutions .com has a good explanation there . I'm going to look for that book I buy from thriftbooks and yea the prices are great. thankd

Before I start I want to inform you that I do have severe anxiety and panic disorder. I'm also a 25 year old female. About 2 years ago I started experiencing these awful chest pains. It scared me so bad I went to the ER to get checked out. They did chest x rays, ekg, etc. All of those came back normal. So they sent me home and said to take asprin. The pains kept coming back. It was to the point where I couldn't leave the house. I quit my job and everything. Everyone told me it was just my anxiety. I finally set myself up with a PCP. Told him all the symptoms I was experiencing, convinced I was going to have a heart attack. He had me do another xray, a stress test, blood work, and wear a heart holter monitor for 72 hours. All of those once again where clear. So he put me on a low dose beta blocker and it's done wonders for me up until about 2 weeks ago. The chest pains, dizziness, heart palpitations, shortness of breath, left arm pain and tingling, etc all came back. I missed 4 days of work cause I couldn't leave the house. Again went to the ER a few days ago over this.... nothing was found... is it all anxiety and in my head? Or is there something wrong with my heart? It's ruining my life... I had all these tests done to show my heart is healthy but I can't help but think my dr missed something... thanks for reading.

I have dealt with chest pains and wondered if it was heart or anxiety. For me @libby93 I use the method of sliding my finger down my chest while applying some pressure. If the muscles hurt then I know the pain is coming from anxiety.
That said it is possible to miss a heart problem. My mother had tests done and nothing showed. Then her heart went into afib and the doctor ordered a echocardiogram with dye that showed heart damage from scarring due to childhood disease.
So be aware that anxiety can cause chest pain, but it can also have other causes. So please keep seeing a doctor and get a second opinion if you feel it is necessary. Please keep us informed on your progress towards solving this
