Just started Xanax...anyone have experiences to share?
I recently moved to a new house I am not liking, and have always struggled with anxiety. My anxiety has spiked and has been out of control over this move which I feel was a mistake. My doctor prescribed sertraline, but I understand I will not feel the affect of the sertraline for 6-8 weeks. For the past couple of weeks I have been taking two .5 mg of Xanax a day, which has really helped. My doctor said Xanax is not a long term solution but that this is a safe dose. I am afraid of addiction and of Xanax, but right now it seems to be the only thing calming me down. Just wondering what others have experienced with Xanax.

H @nire. I will be that one person who tells you: Melatonin gives me terrible anxiety.
What works on one person doesn't necessarily work on another - although it's definitely worth giving a try.
Make sure you work with your Dr. before stopping or increasing/decreasing dosage! My mom was extremely addicted to Xanax and would not admit to it, taking 4 or 5 pills at once (to sleep). Not a good combination as she would then get up in the middle of the night in a "fog" and fall occasionally. Be very careful. Other non-med solutions can be helpful like prayer, deep breathing, reading Scripture. God bless you!
How do you get Good RX?
Pharmacists are now PharmD's, they used to be RPh. Though they have a Doctorate in Pharmacy, they are not Medical Doctors, per se. Likewise, Medical Doctors are Doctors, but they don't have a Doctorate in Pharmacy. All Doctors aren't implicitly capable of intuitively always prescribing the right medication. As a patient, I've seen it firsthand.
Some Doctor's offices are frequented by Drug Reps, sales people for the Drug Companies, that present their products, it's no wonder that some Doctors are swayed by the information presented. And I'm not suggesting wrongdoing. The Drug Reps are a convenient way for Doctors to learn about new products or perhaps new uses for older products.
I had a benign but persistent arrhythmia arise. Though no anti-arrhythmia medications were prescribed, newer BetaBlockers were. Didn't help. An Electro Physiologist Prescribed Acebutolol, an older Beta Blocker, and it worked, finally ending that episode of the arrhythmia over several days. Yet years later, other doctors acted like I had snakes coming out of my head because I was taking an older medication. If it works, Don't Fix It. LOL.
Doctors most often do their best, but their best is oft times hedged by researching the medication online or, better yet, asking a pharmacist that you trust.
sears, sorry it's been a long day, just now getting to messages.
Just go on line to GoodRx. You put in the name of the drug you need. let them know what Zip Code you are and it will bring up a list of Pharmacies in your area.
I've even looked where my Pharamacy has a higher price than another. I go to the lower one and ask them to call my pharamacy to transfer it over.
My pharm. knows now to give me the lowest price. There is no Fee, no extra charges.
If you pharmacy says they don't take Good RX, go on line and if it shows them listed they will. Have had friends as theirs and they say they don't take it, my friend then went on line, forgot to tell you that I print out the coupon that is on the web page with the drug and the pharm. and take it in when I pick up my percription.
I can't believe the # of people who do not use GoodRX.
It has saved me thousands of $$ over the last three years.
Good luck!

Thank You!
I am sorry to hear about your troubles. Anxiety can rob a person of so much life. I know this because it has affected me for 30 years. I suggest that you look for a good psychologist that specializes in anxiety and panic attacks. Psychologists do not prescribe medication but rather try to get to the root of your problem and works with you to rationalize why you are having these feelings. The second suggestion I have for you is to go find a good yoga studio nearby that you can attend a yoga class or two a week. A good yoga instructor can really help teach you how to live in the present. Anxiety is a manifestation of something that happened in the past or something that “ may “ happen in the future. In closing, there is nothing wrong with relying on Xanax to get you to some kind of help. I just don’t want you to become a prisoner of your anxiety and a bottle of pills. Best of luck to you.
I just posted a long post a few days on this topic. Please find it....I think you’ll find it very helpful!
I understand completely and I didn’t mean to shame anyone into not taking any medication that would improve their life. At one point I abused Xanax and I have to say that I still enjoy the feeling that I get. I experienced several traumatic events in 2013 that has left me with PTSD. I have a script for Xanax and like you I take as needed. Prescription is .5 2x a day. Some days I don’t take any and others I take 3. Having said all this, this is totally different than when I was experiencing anxiety and panic attacks. I was able to find the root issues and address them with help. I was able to leave the Xanax behind. I am happy that you are able to find the help that works for you. Again I did not mean to shame anyone.
@alanysm. I used to have severe Anxiety. The kind that would send me to the ER because I thought I was literally dying. I had never heard of Xanax before, but I began to question the medical staff when they would only give me 10 pills at a time. They explained how addictive Xanax is, which terrified me, so I asked them for something non-addictive and they told me about Vistaril. It’s simply a prescription strength Benadryl. It’s used for allergies, but it worked way better than the Xanax did. The Xanax was barely taking the edge off my anxiety. The Vistaril knocked my anxiety completely down. The generic name for it is Hydroxyzine. I’m so thankful they were able to help me without adding “opioid addict” to my problems. Opioids are terrifying. If you can find something else that works for you it would be in your best interest to switch. Even if the doctor is giving you a low dose. Opioids in any form are addicting. And in my experience Klonopin wasn’t much help at all, but everybody is different. I hope you feel better
