Serrated Polyposis Syndrome (SPS)

Posted by countrygirlusa @countrygirlusa, Dec 17, 2018

I am a 61 year old female diagnosed with SPS after my first screening colonoscopy (no symptoms) 3 years ago. I had 3 clearing scopes in 2016 to remove 25+ polyps and am now on a yearly colonoscopy schedule with less than 15 found in 2017 and 2018. If anyone else out there has this condition, have you found any decrease in polyp growth after making lifestyle/diet changes? I do not smoke and eat a mostly plant based diet since my diagnosis. Thank you!

@countrygirlusa I have heard of what you have. My Dr. said I maybe what is called a Polyp farmer. Someone who's body harvests polyps very quickly. I was getting scoped alot now it has settled down and the Doc says every 3 yrs for screenings. I am not sure why this was happening?
Better that they remove them early..
Wish you the best
Jackie

I was recently diagnosed with Serrated Polyposis Syndrome and will be undergoing colonoscopies and polyp removal at 6-mo intervals for the next year. Hoping I can get to annual and not have to have my colon removed. I would be interested to hear if anyone on this thread have experience with this disease and if lifestyle changes, supplements, have had any positive effects. Any positive and hopeful stories would be appreciated.

Hello, I adopted a mostly plant based diet after my SPS diagnosis in 2015, take Turmeric and multi vitamins, and walk 3-4 times per week. My polyp count was only 6 at the last annual scope. Another benefit was I lost some excess pounds so I think my overall health has improved with these lifestyle changes. The most important thing is I still have my colon!!

Hi @rosemaryinez, I want to add my welcome. Thank you @countrygirlusa for your positive story and that you were able to keep your colon and improve your health. That will surely be encouraging for Rosemary.

Rosemary, when is your next colonoscopy? Have you experienced any delays in treatment due to COVID?

I have a had at least six colonoscopy since 2018. The first one they were checking to see why I was constipated for 10+ years and then all of a sudden in 2017 I not only had severe diarrhea but I also gained 50lbs. They found a lot of polyps and decided that I needed to get another one in 6 months. However, I had it down maybe 3 months later because they were looking for Crohn’s Ilium; the diarrhea never went away. So long story short this year I had another colonoscopy, the end of June, and the found several sessile serrated polyps. They said they don’t want me to have another one until 3 years but now I’m having issues again with my bowels and I’m afraid if I wait that long it will just get worse.

@kaforester3, I can certainly understand your concern. You should talk about it with your GI specialist. Our bowels are key to our well-being. It sounds like you may have multiple contributors to finicky bowels causing constipation to diarrhea. This doesn't mean you've developed polyps again or that you have cancer. Colorectal cancer grows very slowly, which is likely why the 3 year space before the next colonoscopy was recommended.

When you had the colonoscopy in June did they discover Crohn's or any other GI issue besides the polyps? What issues are you have with your bowels at this time: constipation or diarrhea?
