Question regarding nerve damage and loss of smell

Posted by micekja @micekja, Dec 15, 2018

I was injured with brain damage and in the accident, my nerves that let me smell were severed and that apparently never returns. So, my question is, do essential oils work for me even though I cant smell them. If so, how? Also, if there were fumes by me, would they have the same effect?

Thank you!

Hi, @micekja - I'm sorry to hear that the nerves allowing you to smell were affected in your accident.

For your question about whether essential oils might still work for you, despite loss in your sense of smell, I'd like to tag some members who may have some input. Please meet @jenniferhunter @lookingforanswers1957 @hopeful33250 @oldkarl @2011panc @tikigod18 @mamajomclane.

What types of essential oils were you looking to use, and what were you hoping to use them for, @micekja?

Hello @micekja

I would also like to welcome you to Mayo Connect. I see from your post that you were in an accident and lost your sense of smell. I'm sure that must be frustrating for you. We never realize how much we depend on our senses until we lose one of them.

You do not mention this, but how long ago was the accident? Did you doctor(s) completely rule out any regeneration of those nerves that affect your sense of smell?

My accident was in May 2017. Apparently those nerves for smelling are ones that don't come back. Fortunately I can taste a little now!

I’m sorry I don’t have any advice but you got me thinking about why I can hardly smell. Maybe due my falls off the roof, out of a tree, off a latter or maybe when I was hit in the head with a baseball bat. What ever happened must
have occurred during my Amnesia days.
Hope you continue to improve,
Jake

I am glad to hear that your taste is returning, @micekja. That must be encouraging.

@micekja I am glad you have brought your question(s) here. I, however, have no input for you about the viability of essential oils with your nerve loss. I often smell things that are not there and do not smell things that are there, so I have learned not to trust my sense of smell. I also do not use essential oils very much. I have some scents I like and rely on the "real" thing more than essential oils. Do you smell anything at all? Or is your sense of smell completely missing? This is an intriguing subject for me and I am interested in following your story.

@jakedduck1 - that is a lot of injury to the head with falls off the roof, out of a tree, off a ladder and being hit with a baseball hat. What are you able to smell and not smell? What started tipping you off that your sense of smell was less than before?

@2011panc - can you share more about the background of your smelling things that are not there and not smelling things that are there?

Hi Lisa,
Wish I knew. I have no memory of those times. I can sometimes smell stuff that cooks for a long time, not in my house though. My Moms cousin use to chase her with Limburger cheese so I bought some to find out how it smelled, could hardly smell it.

@lisalucier I really have no more information about my broken "smeller". I have just noticed it over time and it comes and goes.
